Specs for the z440 state that will use 16GB DDR4-2133 ECC Registered RAM - which is exactly what this R-DIMM is so should work fine.

Will this work for asrock e3c236d2i for a freenas build?

ASRock says that E3C236D2I uses Dual channel DDR4 2133 ECC/NON-ECC UDIMM max 32 GB. Memory can be one of the following a) Unregistered non-ECC, b) unregistered ECC or c) Registered ECC. Unregistered memory is also called U-DIMM. This DIMM is registered ECC (R-DIMM) and so will not likely work on this motherboard. Will most likely not even boot up but give a memory error.

Henry, You will need to get the manual from HP and look up what kind and size of ram will work. You can also go to the crucial website and they have tools that will help you to figure what kind of ram will work with this system.
