Shot on location at Burg Satvey, one of Germany's oldest castles, Joe Bonamassa LIVE AT ROCKPALAST gives old world Europe a shot in the arm with an electrifying brand of rock and blues. Produced by Rockpalast, Germany's legendary music series, Bonamassa gives the performance of his life which some critics are comparing to Stevie Ray Vaughan's EL MOCAMBO. Perroming his own music as well as songs from legendary artists BB King, John Lee Hooker and Steve Winwood.

I strongly recommend that EVERY BLUES/ROCK FAN should BUY THIS NOW!
Okay, like other fans of Joe's concerts reviewing this release I've had the great fortune of seeing him perform more times than I can possible count. Yes, I'm biased, I'll admit it, but take my word for it, if you like great blues playing, THIS belongs in your music video collection, trust me.So, let's get down to the nitty-gritty, shall we? The Rockpalast performance catches Joe Bonamassa last year on his first major European tour with Eric Czar and Kenny Kramme playing to a packed, slack-jawed audience of new fans. It's a stunning concert, filmed close-up and in anamorphic WS, with crisp, clean recorded sound (DTS & Dolby options).Joe plays a selection of tunes that showcases a wide range of his techniques and touches on everything he's done as a solo artist to date. This concert captures all of the delicate nuance of Joe's heavy and soft styles and varied blues rhythms as he selects from his arsenal of guitars just the right instrument for the given song; if Joe were playing golf, even Tiger Woods would be envious! One other thing I should probably mention about the impressively recorded sound is how well balanced the music is with the ambience of the concert venue. Not only are the musicians and their instruments recorded cleanly, but the warm atmosphere of the room is perfect (it's very 'live,' as opposed to cold or dead sounding venues); well, maybe I should've said that the atmosphere was HOT judging by how much Joe, Kenny & Eric are sweating.BTW, one reason that this set may be abreviated (my speculation) is because the Rockpalast folks were apparently trying to promote this as a televised one-on-one "battle of the bands" and it resulted in filming/scheduling conflicts for both the groups and attending audience. So, what are you waiting for, ...more opinions? If you've ever taken a chance and purchased a music DVD based on one of my reviews before, and those of you who've read my comments know that I speak my mind at length and pretty much "calls 'em as I sees 'em," then please take this recommendation to heart. I promise, you won't regret it! In fact, buy several copies as I did and give them to your closest friends with similar or adventurous musical tastes. Yeah, I know, I probably seem a little obsessive/compulsive right now, but just remember what Monk says: "You'll thank me later!" :o)

They don't call him Smokin' Joe for nothing
I own about 5 JB shows on DVD and about 10 of his CDs. Although they are all excellent, I have to say that this particular show is phenomenal. Here the stars have aligned: he was yound and hungry, it's a small venue, great set list, and the bass and drums are worth mention. Good camera work and sound quality. His playing here is nothing short of a man possessed -- no one should be able to play that well. Watching him reminds me of the first time I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan live -- my jaw was hanging open for most of the show. Probably one of the greatest guitarists alive today, as well as of all time. Watching this show is a real treat. Dont forget to crank up the volume.

THIS IS THE BEST JOE BONAMASSA IF YOU ARE A FAN
THIS IS THE BEST JOE BONAMASSA IF YOU ARE A FAN. I WISH HECOULD GO BACK TO THIS. DROP THE SUITS JOE. GET ROCKING AGAIN. I LOVE JOE. SOME OF HIS NEW STUFF IS GOOD BUT THIS IS WHEN HE WAS GREAT. jOE SOMEWHAT HAS GONE TO COMMCIAL WITH THE BOBBLE HEAD DOLLS AND MERCHANDISE. THIS IS WHEN HE WAS RAW. DON'T GET ME WRONG JOE IS A VERY LIKEABLE MAN. HE REALLY IS NICE. BUT I LIKE HIS RAW IMAGE WITH THIS BAND. CZAR AND KRAMMER GAVE HIM THAT EDGE. TWO WORDS TO TELL JOE. "CORPORATIONS SUCKS". IT MADE HIM A LOT OF MONEY. BUT I JUST HATE THE SUITS. IT'S ROCKIN ROLL BLUES FOR CHRIST SAKE. GET THE OLD BAND BACK FOR A TOUR. BUT THEN AGAIN THE MASSES ARE GUIDED AND THE CORPORATION AREW THE SPEED BUMP IN LIFE. I LIKE IT RAW AND TO THE EDGE. PUT THE PEDAL TO THE METAL. HENDRIX DID AND STEVIE RAY DID. ITS A MUST JOE. BUT IO STILL LOVE YA!

Early, more raw performance
I'm a HUGE Bonamassa fan, and enjoy his performances in all their renditions - simple three-piece, more elaborate with backup singers and horn section, acoustic with other elements thrown in. And I do appreciate the maturity and polish Joe has gained over his decades of honing his craft. But I also like to see this earlier, more raw version when things were simpler and less established. It's a great addition to any Bonamassa fan's collection, though. Great to compare and contrast with the current stuff.

Joe Bonamassa rocks the house!
Joe Bonamassa fronts a power trio in a solid live performance of some of his own music and killer covers of others. I was lured to this DVD by his cover of Blind Faith's "Had to Cry Today", followed up by Yes' "Heart Of the Sunrise" and "Starship Trooper". But it's all good! Buy this DVD, crank up as much volume as you can stand, and let yourself be swallowed up by what you hear.

Great band & songs - but what's up with the sound?
If you found this page then you aready know who Joe Bonamassa is. The band's performance is awesome. The camera work is great and keeps you in touch with all 3 members plus the audience. The set list is very enjoyable. But what is up with the sound? This is a CONCERT DVD. We buy these for the sound as much as the visuals, and this one has sub-par sound. As someone else mentioned there is only one sound stream (stereo), despite a link in the menu that promises DTS surround sound. That in itself is no big deal. I'd take great PCM stereo over compressed surround sound any day, but this is NOT great PCM stereo. It's overdriven and clipped AC3. I've purchased other DVDs that exhibit similar problems (Allman Bros Beacon Theater comes to mind) and I just don't get it. Given the storage capacity of DVDs, it's simply inexcusable.Bottom line: It's Joe, so buy the DVD. But like me, you may lament what should have been.Edit: Actually I do get it. It's a Rockpalast recording and they typically have minor audio issues. Maybe they engineer these on the fly for live broadcast, or maybe they record them, but don't take the time to master them to their highest potential. In any case, the show is great, the band is on fire, and the setting looks pretty cool. After dozens of listens, I no longer whine about the sound. It's a great portrait of the original line-up and I am greatful Joe was able to release this show. Buy it!

Joe Bonamassa live at Rockpalast
DVD molto bello.

Great to see JB in his earlier days pounding out ...
This DVD is a little gem. I am a big fan of JB and have 5 of his DVD'S.Great to see JB in his earlier days pounding out rock/blues in a smaller venue like the Rockpalast. The bass player and drummer really complement Joe who is in great form. The recording (both audio and visual) is very good. The venue reminds one of a local bar where everyone stands and gathers around the band. It is very casual and informal but full of energy. The music is raw and powerful and the visual with the roaming cameras captures the audiences true regard for JB and the band. This DVD is my "go to" video right now.
