This book generates faith
This inspirational story reminds me of a Robin Williams movie called Patch Adams. The book brings us a different perspective on the medical profession, leaving a little more aside the technicalities and focusing a little more on what is really important, the patient, his mood, his spirits and how he feels about his condition and in such a way to help heal from all areas. With medical advances we are going a long way, the question is, are we forgetting the patient as the focus of the solution? For me, this book is key not only for health professionals, but all of us who directly assist other people in their life problems, as a lawyer I also feel a lot of responsibility after reading this book.

A Powerful Blend of Medicine, Empathy, and Humanity
Dr. Steven Drabek penned a book that is more of a guide to what healing should be like and less of a medical memoir. As physician and patient, his voice is rarely heard and is deeply moving. He does not merely speak of treating symptoms—he speaks of how to treat people as whole people, compassion and respect foremost. The stories he relates, from his patients and from his own work, are heart-wrenching at times and others incredibly inspiring. I especially enjoyed his coverage of chronic pain and end-of-life care, topics far too often handled clinically but not with compassion. Reading this reminded me once again how much empathy matters, not just in medicine, but in life. Whether you’re a healthcare professional, a caregiver, or someone navigating illness yourself, The Comfortologist offers wisdom, encouragement, and a vision of care that is both humane and inspiring.

Empathy is the key
Being in the patients' shoes sometimes is not as easy as we think, but as a physician, it is key to being a good one. This book transformed the way I see my clients, and even though I'm not a doctor, any person working with people should read it. The way the author shares his story and all the learnings is fantastic. I valued his viewpoint about empathy, how to become more empathetic, and the impact it will have on the patient. Also, the holistic understanding of a person as more than just a symptom or a disease resonated with me. When you translate all this into your daily life, you will treat people differently. You will be able to be more respectful, and in hard situations, just remember that empathy is key; you never know what else is going on in their life.

Amazing book
A very interesting and above all useful book, a book that exposes how the care of people with chronic diseases should be and how it really goes beyond simply a treatment to treat the symptoms, but how to treat the whole person. This book helped me a lot to go beyond that, to have a more global vision of what a person who is going through a delicate time with their health needs. I highly recommend it, not only if you are a person who has a sick family member, but in general it could help you to avoid having any of these chronic diseases that really change your life.

Moving and thought-provoking
The Comfortologist is a moving and thought-provoking memoir that offers a deeply human view of medicine, illness, and end-of-life care. Dr. Steven Drabek’s dual role as a physician and a patient gives this book authenticity and heart. I would have liked a bit more narrative flow in places—the structure sometimes leans toward a clinical tone rather than a memoir. But overall, this book is honest, warm, and hopeful. A powerful resource for patients, caregivers, and medical professionals alike.

Awesome
I have to admit that at first, when I saw the title of the book, I felt a certain caution, because I knew I was about to face a text that would challenge me emotionally, confront me, and perhaps lead me to question things I was not yet ready to face. However, the way the author allows readers to have internal dialogues that later transform into deep reflections and instant changes is unique and very easy to understand. I like it because the author invites the reader to approach the book with patience, openness, and above all, with love. This kind of book, although it may confront us with ourselves, is also an investment in personal growth, as it allows us to have inner conversations that help us be more compassionate with ourselves and take actions that promote well-being and health.

Heartfelt, genuine, you get the full tour
This is a very authentic memoir and auto-biography of a doctor's life and career. With genuine love, sincerity and the wisdom of lived experience warming each sentence, it's a pleasure to read, and you'll want to take your time (I did). I struggled when deciding if this was 5 stars or 4. From a quality perspective it's a 5. If you're looking for ways to think about the lessons evident in this story, they're there if you put in the work to relate, but they're not spelled out. One thing I do wish was different - the cover. I almost scrolled past this because it looks homespun, but don't let that fool you, there's a good book inside.
