The Syntax of Objects (revised)

I had no idea how short a book this was, but it does make you think about objects and how we react to them in an entertaining way.

It's good, small and exquisite, stylish and impactful.

This is a lovely book for those of us who appreciate objects for their aesthetic value and emotional charge. For people who like to create and appreciate the beauty and value of things made with care we find a kindred spirit in Tim Mc Creight. I am going to buy another one so I can mark passages and a few more to give as gifts. I wish it were longer as I savored every page and will reread it often...and probably also use it as justification for my love of stuff!

Much of what we know about the world and about ourselves we have learned from the objects in our lives. The memories of family heirlooms and the lessons of making craft objects are explored here in a highly readable text. The author reaches into his personal life to search for those universal moments where the teacups and trinkets of our lives linger, extending our understanding of our place in the world. After enjoying this book, I experienced a shift in the way I view both the objects which I create and those that are part of my life. It provided a thought-provoking escape from my otherwise hectic life, inviting me to reconsider some of the things that we often take for granted. Tim McCreight writes with a thoughtful tone that feels like a good friend or trusted teacher is sharing something special with you.

Such a solid little book, itself an object weighted in my hands, I could feel its substance and beauty. I gave the book to my brother-in-law as a gift, lovely and perfect.
