Fjällräven Kanken Backpack - Durable Vinylon Fabric, Water-Resistant, Classic Design - School, Travel

First, some background: I purchased my first Kanken on a trip to Canada in 2015. At first I was skeptical of the narrow unpadded straps, but the sales person told me she had thought that as well and that they work better than one might think. Ten years and several more Kankens later, I can say that she was right! The Kanken Original 16L is a fantastic choice for me. I recommend it for anyone who is short both in overall height and in the torso. I am 5’2, narrow shouldered and with a short torso. It is hard to find packs that carry a reasonable load and do not bother my neck or lower back. I find the Kanken capacity ideal for daily, casual use as well as a carry-on for flights. The open ended design means the bag can be packed and organized for a variety of purposes. It makes a fantastic camera bag, grocery bag and day pack for moderate excursions. I find the sternum straps that Fjallraven sells make the Kanken even more functional. I have a few in different colors and swap them out to change the look of the bag. I finally decided to leave a review because I am SO TIRED of reviews that fault the two side pockets for not fitting water bottles. A little research of the product, found on their website, makes clear that this bag was created in 1978. I for one am old enough to recall the 70s. No one, and I do mean no one, was carrying water, much less in personal bottles, in 1978. You were lucky to have soda or an old canteen that was your grandfather’s in the car on long trips. We used water fountains at school and moms who liked to splurge kept tiny paper cups by the sink. Doubtless that makes me sound old, but I hate seeing such a fantastic product maligned because some people do not understand the context in which it was created. I also admit that the straps will not feel good for some people. It’s important to remember with backpacks that they are not a one size fits all item. Everybody’s shoulders and necks are different. For example, one of my daughters loves the design of the Kanken, but it does not suit her neck and shoulders. My son, meanwhile, loves carrying one. The Original 16L Kanken is a high quality product. Its versatility and function have gotten me all around town and even around the world more than once. I have yet to wear one out and I look forward to many more years of use.

I was a big fan of this backpack, until it rained and my expensive textbook was ruined. Two stars because it is a nice bag, but for $65 it should be water repellant. Will NOT buy again. TWO YEARS LATER.... I have updated my original review from 2 stars to 5 and this is why... When I first bought the bag it I used it when it was raining and water went through the zipper and ruined a very expensive book. Since then I have used this bag consistently, and is my first choice of backpack, I just avoid wearing it when it rains. I am giving this bag five stars because it very durable. I even use it to carry groceries, and am amazed how much I can fit in there. I have also taken this bag with me whenever I travel and it is a great carry on bag for my laptop, camera, and plane snacks.

I've always wanted this bag after seeing so many people have them in the city and I decided to finally get it! It's pretty sturdy and I'm able to fit my MacBook Pro 13", a textbook and some other books and things in it with no problem. I know that the slot in the bag isn't really made for laptops but it fits my MBP fine and I just leave the styrofoam in for some extra padding. I'm thinking of getting a laptop sleeve soon and I'm sure that it would be able to fit inside the slot. The design of the bag is really cute and I love how this bag can be used as a tote and as a backpack. I tend to use it as a backpack but I have carried it as a tote! I've gotten several compliments on my bag and I really like how it's boxy. The two pockets on the side are really nice too. I am able to put a Poland Spring water bottle in one pocket and an umbrella in the other pocket. With other backpacks, my water bottle tended to randomly fall out and I wouldn't even notice until I wanted my water bottle but I have never had this problem with this bag. My water bottle and umbrella stay secure in their pockets. I love the small pouch in the front because I'm able to store some small things in there, as well. I wore this bag when it rained a couple of days ago and I was sharing an umbrella with my friend. My bag got wet and I was really scared for my laptop inside. However, when I opened my bag, my laptop was fine and nothing was wet at all! After a few minutes, my bag wasn't even wet anymore (slightly, like barely noticeable, damp) while my friend's still was. I guess the only problem I have with the bag is that it gets dirty fairly easily (I have random white marks on the bag). Personally, I don't mind too much because I think it gives the bag character but if you want it to remain in perfect condition or something, I guess this bag wouldn't be for you.

I have only had it for a day of use, but I am well-pleased with this purchase. The pack seems sturdy, and is lightweight, but with smooth-running zippers. Cambridge Select sent mine, and it seems to be authentic when I googled an "is it fake" thing. Brought it out to run a few errands and had several compliments, while tucked inside it were(drumroll): A mei-tai baby carrier, six diapers and a full pack of wipes, my large-ish wallet, sunglasses case, may daughter's poodle socks, ghillies and hard shoes for Irish dance, a water bottle and two packets of crackers. Also car keys, cell phone and four small wooden trains for baby to play with during dance class. This bag is... Amazing. For reference, I carried it with the top handles and have yet to mess with backpack straps. I will update if I have any problems there... Oh yeah, and since I am a purist, mine is just Navy blue, and it's lovely.

I got this backpack for my daughter and we love it! It’s made with super strong material and the color is gorgeous. It’s like a TARDIS—bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside. It looks small but is extra roomy. My daughter stuffs the backpack to the gills, as it easily holds stuffed animals, markers, her sketchbook, books and even clothes, without ever looking too full. At first I thought it was an expensive purchase, but I am pleasantly surprised by its quality and durability. Definitely worth every time penny. I completely recommend it. You will not be disappointed! 10/10.

I bought this backpack for my urban commute-I saw another commuter with one on the subway and loved the tote handle option. This bag is simple and simply great design. I hemmed and hawed between buying the regular Kanken or the larger sizes, but this one fits my needs perfectly. It can hold my thick work notebook of folders and paperwork, a book for train reading, sunglasses, wallet, coffee tumbler, water bottle and a fair amount more. The pockets on the side are not really wide enough for a water bottle, instead I use them to stash some hand sanitizer and my cellphone charger. The front pocket on the outside holds my iPod, cellphone, pens, work ID, tissues and train passes. My work iPad could easily fit in the interior rear pocket along the back of the backpack, along with a few magazines. But the handles are the best part. I can carry it like a tote in front of me on the super crowded subways and not feel like I am taking up half the subway car. My son now wants one for when he goes to school. I will so use this when I'm out and about with my kids as well. Functional, clean style. Love my Kanken!

These backpacks have a cute squarish design to them, and you can fit a surprising amount of things in them despite looking small. I like that they can usually stand up straight because of the flat bottom, the material used seem rugged, and my girl friend liked it so much, she got one for work and one for school. Although the foam that keeps your laptop isn't anything special, literally just a peice of foam they stuck in a flap, big enough to store your laptop. The back straps don't have any cushion, which can be uncomfortable if you travel heavy.

Love the color and size is exactly what I was looking for. Very pleased!

Ho acquistato questo zaino perche’ lo avevo visto anni fa in Norvegia. Da qualche tempo e’ venduto anche in Italia e l’ho acquistato per il tempo libero e per un viaggio nel sud della Spagna programmato fra 2 settimane. Il colore è bellissimo: tonalità di Viola stupenda. Spero nel tempo non scolorisca. Lo zaino, sebbene non l’abbia ancora utilizzato molto, è di dimensioni giuste, ne’ grande ne’ piccolo contiene alla perfezione il mio mac book air da 13 pollici. Non ha molte tasche ma quelle che ha a mio avviso bastano. Il cuscinetto di gomma piuma all’interno protegge anche la schiena. Le cinghie sembrano resistenti e di colore in tinta con il resto. Consiglio l’acquisto a tutti: zaino di qualità, bello esteticamente, colore stupendo, comodo perche’ sottile, si può piegare e mettere in valigia. E’ arrivato settimana scorsa puntuale come sempre e con buon imballaggio, quindi non saprei esprimermi in termini di durata nel tempo.
