yes, it is hollow from underneath. I had the same idea and inserted a box section to extend. not sure of the size though

No it is painted and after four years it is showing no sign of corrosion

Yes it does....I chose this one because bury into cement and no fixing bolts ( dodgy people could just unbolt to remove)
