Expensive, but the documentation and app make it worth it
This is a great robotic car kit. It requires some patience, plus a willingness to read the assembly instructions, in order to get it assembled. Adult guidance is definitely necessary for the assembly part. But once it's assembled, it's easy to program, either with block programming (similar to Lego Mindstorms or Scratch), with Arduino (basically C) or with Python. Sample programs are provided and the documentation (freely downloadable from acebott dot com) is superb. The documentation not only shows "how" to implement a particular feature, it also explains "why" you would want to have that feature. Note that in the download packet are "read me first!" files - both for the car itself and for the solar panel kit. Definitely read those first. There is a program that you need to run before assembling the solar panel and there is information about what batteries are needed for the car. The only downside is that you need to purchase batteries separately. You could follow the link that acebott provides or you could just shop for batteries with the same number and find them for about half the price.
