Does this work off a public network like xfinity wifi?

If the Thermostat can see the network and can join, it should work. Your phone should be in the same Network to make it easier to communicate with the thermostat during setup. During initial setup you will connect to the Thermostat's WiFi directly, then you will provide the WiFi (i.e.: xfinity) Network to the Thermostat, then it should switch to that WiFi. I have not tried on an open network, but I do not see why it should not work. Hope this helps.

My xfi router used a single ssid for 2.4/5ghz bands. can i simply disabled the 5ghz radio, setup this thermostat and then re-enable the 5ghz radio?

It may not be necessary to disable the 5GHz band as dual-band routers with band steering will generally make the assessment and direct the thermostat to the appropriate frequency band. Is there a 2 degree deadban in hearing and cooling ?

Does this work with a built-in humidifier system?

A: This product does not control humidifiers. They have more expensive others that do, but this simple one is for heat and cool only.
