what weight do you recommend for a newbie?

As far as the size (sm,med,lg) really depends upon your height and weight.... I'm 5ft 6in tall, 145lbs. I purchased a medium and it fits perfect. For the weight of the vest....if you're a beginner at whatever it is you're doing, your best bet is to go with the least amount of weight. I purchased the 12lb vest, and if you really think about it, that is a lot of extra weight to be carrying around. Crawl before you walk, start slow.

does it bounce around or move when running and yoga practice ?

If you are small (5ft 3 108lbs) and get the 20lb plus size weight vest, it will eventually put too much pressure on the collar bone/shoulder. I get friction/pressure marks and have to put a thick pair of socks on my shoulders under the vest when using it for long periods or for movement that causes you to bounce. That said, this is definitely one of the better weight vests out there for small women, who want to wear a vest with significant weight ie 20lbs plus.

This is the second 20 pound vest I bought and noticed a strong odor when I removed it from the box, almost likely an oily scent. Suggestions?

Let the vest air out outside for 24 hours. This is what I did and the odor decreased significantly, although it never totally goes away (i've had mine 3 months). Hope this helps.
