What is the distance between the two support pieces? I would like to use this for cleaning the bore of an AR15 upper with a speed on it.

Don't know exact distance but mine works well at the range for cleaning AR with 16" barrel.

Can it be used to tap a stock

It depends on how hard you have to tap. It is pretty solid but the decision to tap a stock I might consider something more solid.

Would this work well to apply a muzzle brake? Basically can the forks handle the twisting/torquing?

I don't believe it would hold up for that type of use. It keeps your gun cradled while shoving rods through the barrel, but I do not believe it would hold it still, while trying to thread a muzzle brake off or on.

How well does this work for ar15's and ak47 type rifles??? (i see most all pictures showing standard hunting rifles)

It'll work with any rifle. We use Sks's on it and several other guns including the AR. This is a nice lil product.
