Quality-Quality-Quality
Amazon offers two different free standing safety rails. I originally ordered the less expensive ($32) one. I received and tried to assemble the cheaper of the two, but it had a manufacturers defect. The holes in the metal legs had been bored a tad too large and you could not secure the wing nut screws and the screws were too short to secure them with a nut. Replacement of the screws was not an option. So Amazing Amazon sent me a replacement--same problem. And then another, same problem. Upshot is I changed my order to this one. Different manufacturer and a little different style. Well folks, let me tell you right out of the box the difference in quality was not only apparent but was amazing. The safety rail went together seamlessly. Even for a 75 year old lady with arthritis, I had it together in less than 10 minutes. This Safety rail can be used in the shower, at the bathroom sink or on the commode. I am using it even in the kitchen. I do have a walker but the safety rail is not prone to move if I stumble (which by design a walker does). It is a blessing to help me keep my independence. Also, at the commode, you can easily raise and lower the seat and lid without having to move the safety rail, This rail is STRONG AND STURDY. The only thing I would change if I could would be to make it about 1 1/2 inches wider so it would fit around the commode shelves. The safety rail will work with the shelves, but with the shelves, the rail won't fit flush with the commode tank. There is a gap of about an inch between the tank and the safety rail's cross bar when the commode shelves are in place. On my particular commode this prevents me from being able to lower the commode lid. Still I give this a resounding 5 star revue. Take my advice and just go ahead and order the Carex Safety Rail to begin with. The material from which it is made is heavier, the hardware is better quality and the overall design is better thought out. It is far superior to the other Amazon offering! I guess it comes back to the old saw--You get what you pay for. And thank goodness for Amazing Amazon for genuine customer service!

Carex Toilet Safety Rails -- Sturdy, Easy to Assemble, Safe for Daily Use -- AND Easily Portable!
My sister recently experienced a health challenge that means she now needs extra assistance when using the toilet. This frame is the perfect safety device that enables her to sit/stand with greater confidence and stability when she needs to use the toilet. This frame helps her keep some of her independence and confidence. The frame is easy to assemble and install. For those who are reluctant to install something more permanent in the bathroom, this may be an excellent solution! No holes to drill, and no bolts to attach anywhere in the bathroom. Just place the frame over the toilet and put it to use. And... the frame will not interfere with opening/closing the toilet seat lid (even self-closing lids). The Carex may also be helpful if you're taking a road trip and staying at an hotel or motel: no need to disassemble it. The frame can fold flat and be popped in the back of your car. Some medical appliances like this frame are very pricey and health care insurance plans often don't cover such appliances. While the Carex frame is not covered by my sister's policy, it is well-priced and reasonably affordable.

Good to help with going from toilet to standing position.
This was used to help someone with very limited mobility (Parkinson's) transfer between toilet and wheelchair. It works pretty well for this purpose. Before this we had a frame that looks similar but had a built-in toilet seat; the seat was quite uncomfortable. This device lets you use the toilet seat your toilet already has, much more comfy. Assembly: Pretty easy to assemble. No tools required. Does require some hand dexterity, so if you have arthritis or similar you may need help. I have full manual dexterity and it took me less than 10 minutes to assemble. Installation takes 30 seconds: you just place it over the the toilet. Stability: Very stable for just standing up and down, like if you have knee troubles. Our usage was for someone who is able to stand in a limited way for a few seconds. As long as he is careful to push himself to standing using the wheelchair arms and take two steps to turn so he is oriented over the toilet seat to sit down. It is NOT stable enough to handle him pulling on it sideways in order to haul himself to a standing position (that is, using it like a grab bar). This might be obvious, but he did fall once trying to do this, so just wanted to give his warning. He uses is successfully now in conjunction with a proper grab bar. Durability: it seems pretty durable but it's only been in use for a few weeks. It does wiggle a bit because the assembly isn't as snug as it could be, but that doesn't seem to be a real problem in use.

Sturdy and easy to put together
First experience with a safety rail like this. Easy to put together and no tools needed. My tip is to look at both sides of the legs before committing to which side you put the her bolts in - they shaped the holes on one side of the pole in the hex shape so it's clear but you may miss it if you're rushing. My mom was able to get up from the toilet easier since this gives her leverage on both sides of her body. It was sturdy as she got up. Happy with this purchase!

A safe, stable, quality and versatile product.
I have a two story home and purchased 2 of these to assist in recovery from a total knee replacement. This is an extremely well built item. I am a petite woman with not a lot of grip strength and I was able to easily assemble both units. The legs adjust using steel push buttons, similar to those you would find on the metal tubing of a canister vacuum cleaner. NOTE:***** Like all products, you need to use the item PROPERLY.***** You must position your hands in the MIDDLE of the grips. Placing BOTH hands incorrectly towards the very FRONT or using only ONE SIDE of the grips, and pressing down will cause the item to become unstable and tip over. Select another product if you are physically unable to apply EQUAL hand pressure. After no longer needing the lifting assistance, I moved one unit to assist me in making the 8 inch step from my family room into the kitchen. The second unit I used to help me navigate the 10 inch step from my kitchen into the sunroom. This product offered a much safer and stable alternative than my walker, which has two wheels. This is truly a quality product. This product is so well made, it will certainly outlast me!

Lifesaver!
I was taking my 91-year old mom with me on a trip up to Cambria, CA. I realized, a few days before we were to leave, that she would have difficulty sitting on a hotel toilet (staying at a small hotel with their one ADA room already booked)! I read the reviews of this brand, and another cheaper one, but I’m glad I went with this one! It was easy to assemble and folded small to pack into the trunk of my car. I found it to be sturdy and I liked it because it didn’t stick out too much which allowed room for my mom’s walker to be in the bathroom with her. I liked the padded bars and the rubber feet on the legs. Although I too had problems with the lock stoppers (?) popping off a few times. After looking at the picture on Amazon, I realized I was putting them in on the inside instead of the outside of the folding part (dark metal). I’ll try again when we need to take it with us on another trip, but I’ll also bring duct tape to tape them in place when it needs to be in a “locked” position. Not a big issue since only one or two would pop off. My biggest worry was that I would pack it up and not check that I had all four locks! I placed a small bag on a large caliber and attached it so I had somewhere to place the locks when it wasn’t in use. It would be nice if there was somewhere on this item that you could stick the locks for storing when not needed. The bag was the best solution I could come up with. Overall, I’d recommend this brand.

Ok but
It's okay. I like the height being 5'11 male. It seems sturdy. I'm 220 lb and holds my weight and I feel stable getting up and down. But there is one big design flaw, the stabilizing clips keep popping out. Whoever designed it did a terrible job because there is no part of the clip that actually clicks in. It's just a mini metal that slides in with a U-shaped plastic at the end that wraps around the frame. But one of them keeps popping off if you jiggle the arms too much. It's supposed to be stabilizing and yet I doubt that. I would return it except I don't want to have to return yet another item to.... If it keeps popping off I'll just use tape to hold it on. I would not buy this again with that flaw knowing what I know now. But if they fix that flaw it's a very nice item. Thus the 3 stars. All else 4 stars.

We Like The Carex Bathroom Safety Rail Concept
In advance of my spouse's knee replacement surgery, we began searching, online, looking at reviews of safrety devices that would be useful for her recovery at home. One of our best choices, it turns out, was buying the Carex Health Brands Bathroom Safety Rail. Unlike many of the toilet safety products we considered, this is a sturdy standalone device that is not bolted to the toilet and can be moved to our second bathroom as needed. It really is based in concept on a walker, but is engineered so that it fits perfectly back against the toilet tank and the toilet seat lid easily folds back onto a hefty out-of-the-way crossbar. The height of the rubber padded left and right arms is quickly adjustable, and those rails provide just the right grips for a person recovering from hip or knee surgery (or anyone, for that matter) to lift themselves off the seat. Incidentally, we also purchased a Carex Health Brands Elongated Folding Toilet Riser, which turned out to fit nicely on the elongagted toilets in our home. The chief advantage of this design is that it folds up for easy cleaning and the original toilet seat and cover can be attached using long bolts supplied with the riser that go through the existing bolt holes in the toilet base and hold everything solidly in place. But after my wife's knee surgery, the surgeon recommended we keep the lower height of the existing toilet seat to facilitate a greater degree of knee movement. Recovering from hip surgery, however, might require the use of the riser at some future date...so we are keeping it just in case.

Good safety rails
Used these safety rails post-hip replacement. Easy to assemble. It does not attach to the toilet so can be moved between bathrooms if needed. Very sturdy...I never felt unsafe using them. Easy to clean.

Solid structure, able to take good amount of weight.
These rails work fine. They are sturdy when fully opened and take weight well, doesn't wobble. We have it set up on the toilet and the only issue is that the toilet seat drops because it's a soft foam lid which takes up more space than a plain plastic one. The handles are covered with a soft material that is comfortable to grip. Overall, this does what it says it does, no complaints.
