Durable, smooth, and reliable after 2 years of use
The DEWALT 50-foot retractable air hose reel has been a great investment. Iโve used it for nearly two years in a shop environment, and it still works like new. The build quality is excellent โ the housing is tough, the retraction system is smooth, and the hose itself hasnโt cracked or worn. Ease of use is a big plus. It retracts cleanly every time, locks where you want it, and swivels freely on the mount. For shop or garage setups, it keeps the space clean and efficient. Highly recommended for both professional and home use. Q&A: Q: Does the reel retract smoothly after extended use? A: Yes โ after nearly 2 years, the retraction is still smooth and reliable. Q: Is the hose itself durable and kink-resistant? A: Absolutely โ the hose is heavy-duty and holds up well to daily use without kinking. Q: Is the reel housing made of metal or plastic? A: The housing is durable steel, not plastic. It feels solid and built for long-term shop use.

Solid hose reel
I installed this hanging from the ceiling of my garage. I didn't like the way the fair-lead was oriented out of the box, so I dis-assembled the fair-lead from the arm, rotated the arm and re-attached the fair-lead so that the hose hangs straight down from the overhead reel, with the reel turned to put the inlet fitting on the side closest to the compressor. Not a big deal, but not discussed in the manual, so a bit off-the-road. Overhead mounting requires a very sturdy mounting because this thing is heavy and will endure many cycles of pulling out and recoil. I sure don't want it to fall and scuff the floor. The operation is smooth and reliable, no flex in the fair-lead arm and the spring has just-right tension. The hose pulls smoothly and is flexible. The only thing I don't like is listening for the clicking sound that indicates the hose is locked in place. Works fine if I'm close or it's quiet; not as easy if I'm pulling the hose out into the driveway or there is noise in the garage. Minor, but worth mentioning.

WOW
I have been searching for a decent air hose reel for about a week and decided on this one. It had the features of a hose reel that I demanded. I has a double arm build rather than single as many are. To me this is sign of better quality. I wanted an open reel vs a enclosed one. If the hose would roll up over its self I wanted the ability to be able to straighten it where in a closed reel application I would not. I like the 4 hefty rollers at the hose dispenser which will allow easy pull and return at any angle. This is a very heavy, well built unit. I'm sure I will need a second set of hands to mount this at the ceiling where I intend to hang it. It functions very smoothly. Absolutely no complaints. Yes, the hose is stamped, (Made in China) but is appears to be a very good quality and pliable. Changing hoses if necessary will not be a problem is the need should ever arise. I went this unit largely because of the DeWalt name. This air hose reel did not disappoint.

Incorrect factory assembly
DeWalt and other customers need to know that the tension spring for the pawl on the ratcheting mechanism is hooked on the wrong hole. It must be moved to the hole closest to the reel or it will rub on the toothed wheel. This will wear out and break the spring and the ratchet function will be lost. On another note, it takes too much pulling force to unwind the hose and the rollers on the fairlead are too small. The hose rubs on the corners instead of rolling. You must be careful and always avoid uncontrolled hose rewind. The rewind force is also very strong. Other than that I think itโs a good unit. I hope itโs durable.

Works great.....much improved design.
I had this same model several years ago and it worked OK. It did what it was supposed to, but I could never get the spring adjusted to where it would retract the hose without some manual help. The internal rewind mechanism finally broke and it became a manual hose reel so I took a chance and bought another one. This one appears to be a much better design. It has a swivel connection on the reel for the whip that connects to the compressor. The pawl mechanism that controls the hose release and retraction is on the outside of the hose wheel, which makes it much easier to fix it if it breaks. The retraction mechanism has been beefed up to where you need to hold onto the hose when it's rewinding.....which is a huge improvement. The only con is the hose does have a rubbery odor, but it's not a big deal. As I recall, my old one had the same issue and within a couple of weeks the odor was gone. Overall, I would highly recommend it.

Great reel
Love these hose reels. We have a fleet of 8 trucks and all have this reel. The perfect size and fits in any space. The lock mechanicism works like a charm. The quality is long lasting and holds up to daily use.

Major restriction in reel mechanism, reel doesn't reel on its own.
A major restriction in the reel mechanism. After switching to this hose reel I noticed that my impacts were pretty much worthless. Bought a pressure gauge to stick between hose and tool. Found with my mini impact I was at about 40 psi with the tank set to 125 psi. I've since changed my compressor to a 60gal 5hp and same. If I have the regulator at the compressor set to 100psi I'm now getting 30 psi at the end of the hose running a nitro cat 1250, the hose just can't keep up. You can hear the air filling the hose back up after stopping the impact , audibly traced the restriction back to the reel mechanism. The hose works for blowing air or filling tires but is way too restrictive to run air tools. Also it doesn't have enough power to wind the hose back up on its own, I've followed the directions 3 times now to run a couple extra loops on the reel to tighten the spring which works for a short time, then I need to help the reel pull the hose in. Also idk what the hose is coated with but it leaves a wierd residue on your hands when you touch it.

Finally a retractable hose reel!
I've been living with a 25 dollar hose reel for ages now and finally splurged to get this retractable reel from dewalt. It is a solid double arm design and looks cool to boot. I'm a big dewalt fan, so this dresses up the garage. Took me about two hours to hang since I had to span ceiling joists with some 2x4's to provide a solid ceiling mount. I went with 4 5" long 3/8" diameter lag bolts to mount the 2x4's to the ceiling two of which do double duty as the mounts for two of the holes in the mounting plate. I used some 2" lag bolts for the other two holes. I figure this will provide a solid mount and I don't have to worry about someone pulling it on top of themselves. I did have to adjust the tension, this was a relatively simple process of depressurizing the system, removing the plastic stop on the end of the hose, pulling out about 2 feet and wrapping the excess hose around the wheel while it was still locked, this provided a bit more tension for the last few feet or so. This thing is so much easier to use the old one, very pleased with this purchase!
