Pleased with purchase (still 2017)
---UPDATE---------- (2017-09-23) Bought it in 2011, finish color has faded and the graduated markings in the viewing window are gone, but it is still mechanically sound and functions flawlessly during daily use. ---END UPDATE--- ---UPDATE---------- (2014-03-01) Two years and a few months of twice daily use and the kettle is still functioning fine. Only thing to report is that the graduated markings in the viewing window have started to fade a bit. ---END UPDATE--- I bought this tea kettle almost 6 months ago and it has been a great item. It boils a Liter of water in about 4 minutes. The stainless steel is of quite good quality, particularly in this age of junk Chinese steel, there has been no pitting, heat discoloration, or anything. The handle has a really comfortable feel in hand, pouring motion seems natural. There is no plastic to spoil the taste; save for the level viewing window which is easy to see. In response to earlier reviews... That's not corrosion you see, it's mineral build up from your water; my well water is very thoroughly filtered, and so the inside of the kettle is like new... Mineral free water is also an advantage to me because yes the lid is a bit awkward placed under the handle, and I see it might been inconvenient when cleaning (which I don't have to do)... Also as someone wrote the lid is a bit tight, but it has to be because it is part of the circuit that completes the auto shut off... The paint on ours is holding up well, it looks to have been finely applied (electrostatically), and then sprayed with a gloss lacquer... Yes as someone pointed out the cord is only 2' long, but this thing is meant to sit on a kitchen counter with a nearby outlet. And secondly this is a 1500 Watt heating element attached to a 120V source; quick math says that's 12.5 Amps drawn via a flexible 14 AWG wire (at best), so keeping the cord short is a safety factor in my opinion. I would urge folks not to go plugging this kettle into a cheap extension cord. For me any disadvantages are outweighed by how well it has worked, and the fact that it is a good quality STEEL kettle. I would buy another, or give it as a gift, no problem.

Best $35 I spent for a small appliance. 3 years of use and still looks the same as it did when we first bought it.
I got this kettle as one of the Christmas presents for my boyfriend when we first started dating back in December of 2011. At that time we both had just moved to a college town to attend a university and while pulling all nighters studying for exams he would comment on how useful my electric kettle was and how he should get one for himself. Mine was a cheap, plastic electric kettle I got from Bells but I wanted to get him something that seemed a bit sturdier and was more pleasant to look at (without hitting my college student budget too hard). More than 3 years later, and this kettle is still serving its purpose. We had moved and came back 4 different times for out of state internships, bringing this kettle with us. My kettle gave up sometime in mid-2012, but his is still going strong, just like the first day. The color has not faded at all and still holds its vibrant, shiny, deep red. What a worthy investment! Regarding what most people say about how the sides get hot - it's true, but we have never burned ourselves on this kettle. I usually fill this kettle all the way when boiling water for tea because we drink a lot and I tend to steep the tea in a 1L thermos. Once the water is boiled, I pour it into the thermos, and although the kettle is full, the handle is so comfortable and sturdy and has never slipped out of my hands. Also the bottom of the kettle is plastic, so you can always use that for support with your other hand. Maybe if we had children in the house to worry about possibly touching the sides and burning themselves, I might think about getting rid of this kettle, but even then I would have a hard time letting it go - it has served us so well and still looks brand spanking new! How many cheap products do you have in your house that are over 3 years old but look like you just bought them? For the money, I don't think I could find a better deal. Another thing I really love about the kettle is that it is completely removable from the base. With my old kettle, you had to unplug the cord and carry it to the table, but here you just lift it off the base and carry it to wherever you like. And again, because of the plastic bottom you don't have to worry about protecting the surface you decide to set it onto. I know some people complain about how you can't move the handle out of the way while filling it up. I guess I can see how it may be a problem for some, but it has never really bothered me. I have no issues filling it up. Sometimes I don't even bother taking the lid off and just fill it through the spout - because there is a liquid meter on the back, it's actually perfect to know when it's full. One last thing - I feel like the speed at which it boils the water is superb. When we moved into our new place that has a gas stove instead of electric, I was convinced I would be able to boil the water faster on the stovetop, but one evening I decided to give it a try and boiled half a liter of water in a this kettle and in a pot on the stove at the same time. What do you know.... the kettle won! I couldn't love this little appliance more, and if it happens to break in the near future, I will get the same one as a replacement in a heartbeat. This is definitely the best use of $35 I have ever gotten! If you decide to give this guy a try, I hope you love it as much as we have loved ours!

Pretty & Mostly Awesome!
I love this kettle! It's cute and functional with very minimal (super minor) drawbacks. What you should know: -The first kettle I received was defective and never turned on. Amazon is amazing. Two days later I had a working replacement before my return had even made it back to Amazon. -It's a little big, but pretty enough that you don't mind the space that it takes up. -It boils water pretty quickly. It's much faster than boiling water on a stove or in the microwave but a little slower than my old (ugly) plastic electric kettle. -The position of the handle is not in a good place for removing and putting on the lid of the kettle. It's definitely not a deal-breaker but they could have done a better job design-wise. -Even though it's made of steel, it's light enough to hold with one hand without getting tired. -It's designed well enough that you never feel like you're going to accidentally touch a hot spot. -It does lose heat pretty quickly but, it boils it so quickly again that I really don't mind. -Everyone that has visited our apartment wants one! If you just need to boil water quickly and don't care about aesthetics, go for a plastic electric kettle because the price can't be beat. But if you want a kettle that does the job and looks good doing it at a reasonable price, I highly recommend this kettle!

Hot H2O express
Bought this as a gift for someone who drinks Aeropress-made coffee almost non-stop. Since the buttons on the microwave were wearing out from repeated programmings of "need hot water NOW," I thought an electric kettle would be a better, more volume-friendly solution. This kettle has been a real time-saver in so many ways. Not only is it used for Aeropress-made coffee, but it also gets used for giving a turbo shot to pasta water, for sterlizing pet food dishes, and even for keeping the kitchen drains clean and fresh. This little kettle gets high marks from me because it looks sharp, performs well, and didn't break the bank. Though there are higher priced, fancier kettles available, I see no reason to spend a lot of scratch on an appliance that's got a relatively narrow reason for existence. I'm a raging cheapskate and defintely could have bought a less-attractive model, but I wanted something that looked good and could handle the rigors of many uses on a daily basis. This kettle has met all those requirements. Operation of the unit is dummy-proof: fill, push down the switch, wait just a few minutes, then enjoy your cuppa soup, French Press coffee, tea, cocoa, whatever. The kettle connects to the heating element in a spot dead center on the base; you can't get this wrong even if you try. There is no guard over the spout, so wherever/whenever you decide to tip the kettle, you'd better mean it. If you need to be in hot water (ha!) quickly, this is how you'll do it. We use ours every day and love it.

Great Kettle-No Problems
I've been using this kettle every day for 2 months now and I absolutely love it. I use it for making tea as well as cooking. The safety feature works well on it so I can turn it on, walk away and not worry about it boiling itself dry. I keep it full of water and haven't found any corrosion or mold issues. Heating element is on the bottom but there's a rod that protrudes up towards the back which also makes it hard to clean. It has a plastic water level window but it's easier to gauge the water level by feel or weight. I also haven't had any of the problems as the 1-2 star comments have complained about. Paint chipping--NO Foul smell--NO *first use had a plastic smell, but never came back. Completely corroding inside--NO *it's stainless, so they're mineral deposits. My complaints are minor and accept them since this is a bargain kettle. Pros: -Cordless -Stainless Steel -Base is cool enough to set on any surface when water is scalding -Boils water faster than stove -Dirty cheap compared to all the rest -Saftey shut-off/auto shut-off works -On/off switch is lights up and is clearly visible Cons: -Removable water strainer/filter is hard to put back in -No temperature control -Plastic water level window (for those who avoid using plastic) **To counter the mineral deposits, I just put a couple tablespoons of white vinegar the the water at the "Minimum line", switch it on until it rumbles and they're completely dissolved in 20 minutes ===3 yr update=== Bought a second one for my girlfriend and she loves hers. I still have mine. Still love it. No Problems. If it did break tomorrow, I might replace it with the exact same one. ~~06Mar2016~~ I've been using it daily and have two. The original has not problem and have been using it 10-15 times a week no problem. Second one has a slow leak which only leaves water stains on the seam, which I don't care that much to return or call Hamilton Beach. I might just call customer service to further this review. Stay posted.

Cut the Cord!
I bought this kettle to replace one that my brother in law bought us for a wedding present almost 17 years ago. It certainly did the job and owed me nothing. But after so long, an internal element let go and it had to be replaced. I am pretty frugal and a compulsive comparison shopper, so I had my work cut out for me. This kettle ticked all the boxes I was after and has been a great choice. I would definitely recommend it. PRO's 1) Large capacity is enough for just about anything. We make fresh brewed iced tea year round and this will do a large pot easily. 2) Being able to pick the kettle up off of the electric base is really convenient. My previous model had to unplug the cord from the kettle itself. They should all be like this. 3) All stainless, inside and out, is very easy to clean. 4) Quick heating. This will get hot, fast. EITHER WAY's 1) An all-metal body does get very hot on the outside, so be careful 2) the switch on the side is very easy to use, and lit to see if it is on, but because it sticks out so far I am worried that one day I'll bust it off. Nothing so far but I'll continue to be careful. 3) Pouring angle of the kettle is very good, and comfortable, until you get to the last 2 cups. Then you have to almost turn the thing completely upside down. CON's 1) Top handle is fixed and it is a little difficult to get the top off and out to fill at the tap. Not bad though. I am able to fit a spray-handle type faucet between the handle and the top of the kettle. 2) Water level marker on back is pretty hard to read. Seems to steam up and then can't quite tell how much is in there. Only really an issue if you need a specific amount of hot water. 3) The kettle is loud. Water heating up does make a good amount of noise, then, oddly, gets quiet once it reaches temperature. Maybe this is a PRO, ... Don't know. All in all I am very happy with the kettle. The CON's that I list are pretty minor for me. What I wanted was hot water in an easy to use, clean design, and I got that is spades. RECOMMENDED.

Worked well for nearly a year
What I like about this kettle is that it doesn't default to a lower temperature like the Cuisinart and it isn't plastic like the one it replaced, and that it has an on-off switch. There are drawbacks though. It's awkward to fill. (You can yank up the lid to fill it easily, but that's hard to do since the lid is located directly under the handle AND it's a tight fit. Or you can try to pour a stream of water into the fairly small opening of the spout, spilling it down the side if you get it wrong.) And steam billows from the spout making it awkward to pour into the teapot. Nonetheless, it works better than others I've endured. However, the on-off switch has been flaky. A few months ago it stopped working right. It would still boil water when placed on the base but we couldn't turn it off (or on). We continued using it because it was too expensive to send back for repair, and over a few days the switch spontaneously healed itself. Now it's done the same thing - still boiling water but it can only be turned off except by removing the kettle from the base. So the bottom line is yes, it works, but not reliably.

Buy it - you won't regret it.
Gorgeous kettle. Heats Quickly. Quiet. I was a bit hesitant to purchase this kettle when reading other reviews - don't be. I'm a klutz - the finish has been fine (but, I haven't banged with a pot either.) Also, the finish has kept its deep color, stayed nice and shiny and hasn't been covered with water spots... We have very hard water - I do occasionally swipe the finish with a kitchen towel. Some folks had mentioned a leaking bottom seam... no such thing on mine at least. I wonder if they saw drips of water that collected at the seam at the bottom from splashes when filling it and thought it was a leak? I love that the base of the kettle itself is cool to the touch even after boiling - so you can set it down anywhere - or put your hand on it without burning yourself. Also I don't know how they did it, but the spout design is excellent - it never drips when you pour. Last thing - it really does heat quickly, I had wondered if its not having a whistle was going to be an issue. Its not. Its so fast that your previous ritual of going away and sitting for a few minutes while you wait for the whistle is over. Fill it up, wait maybe a minute while you get your cups and tea together, and it makes a 'click' sound when it turns itself off to let you know the water's boiled. All and all I have been very happy with this product.

Best kettle I've ever had
Just as described! Best kettle I've ever had. Boils up a full kettle of water in under 8 minutes. Love the safety shut off feature! Love the red color...looks great in my kitchen. 2018 UPDATE ...Four years later and we're still using the same kettle. We use it daily. I'm planning on purchasing a second one to tuck away ... just in case they stop making this one, especially in this cranberry red color!!! June 2019 UPDATE ....Still using the same kettle! Still used daily. Purchased a 2nd one when it went on sale and it's still in it's original box waiting for this one to die out! After using this kettle for 5 years, the handle did start getting a little loose. It's very easy to retighten. The entire top half of the handle slides all the way back, exposing the screws/nuts. Simple retighten and slide the top half of the handle back into place. April 2022 UPDATE .... still using the same kettle (gets used every day, at least twice a day!)! Still have the new one in the box waiting for this one to burn out!! What can I say??? Hamilton Beach makes an awesome kettle!!!!!

Heats fast and looks nice. If I had a complaint it is that it is kind of large and takes up decent counter space or when stored. I would still get this again. The metal construction is nice and easy to clean.
