It doesn't need a strap. This item is lightweight.

Does the yoga mat slip?

It has. And when it does, I know it's time to wipe it down as it has picked up dust (and from my house - pet hair). Slippage doesn't happen often, I LOVE this yoga mat. It all depends on how dust and pet hair-free the surface is you are using it on. Go ahead and buy it, you'll like it.
