Can the step be adjusted to be right or left?

Yes. It comes separate, you can put the cane in so it is easy to use on left or right. It’s a little higher step then I wanted. And the cane goes into a cup in the step , to be fastened. I wish the cane would push down on the solid floor/step instead of relying on the plastic to take the pressure of the cane.
