A thousand percent better than a fanny pack!
Several years ago, a magical solution for male-kind was brought forth and bequeathed upon the land. The magical device was the cargo short. Many years passed, and cargo shorts proved themselves time and time again as a perfect solution to carrying all the stuff a guy needs on any given day. But now, a sad development has bubbled to the surface… Cargo Short Shaming… Some fashion-forward people have decided that cargo shorts are stupid, and passé, and fall into the same category as the fanny-pack. If we are to please (or at least not embarrass) our significant-others, we must revert to a standard 4-pocket pair of shorts (NO DENIM, by the way)… That’s where this Columbia Silver Ridge Short comes in. It appears to be a standard short, but has a stealthy extra pocket for cell phone, gum, fidget spinner, yo-yo, pocket-watch, compass, or monocle. The shorts are also a bit stretchy, so we can buy a slightly smaller size than we should - which allows us to believe we aren’t as pudgy as we may actually be. I would recommend buying your “actual” size however because the shorts seem to be pretty true to size. So, while it’s not really a cargo short, it does allow us to hold on to one extra pocket just a while longer, until the fashion police decide men should not be allowed to have pockets. The shorts look great, feel great, and are well built. Long live pockets!

Did I need to order the next size larger, just for access to the front pockets?
I have one pair of Columbia shorts that I love, and used the same sizing to order this pair. It's okay, but compared poorly to my first pair. What dod I like? I like the zippered side pocket (great for security when traveling). I like the length. And I like the stretchy fabric... it is comfortable. What I didn't like were the shallow front pockets, the back pockets with no flaps or velcro, and most of all, the tight, flat front. I can only put my hands in the front pockets because the material is stretchy. Yesterday, I was hitting some tennis balls wearing these shorts. If I tried to put an extra ball in the front pocket, I needed two hands to get the ball out... one to grab the ball, and the other to hold the bottom of the pocket in place.Did I need to order the next size larger, just for access to the front pockets?

Too tight overall, thin material. A disappointment overall.
Sent these back immediately. Too tight overall, no room to give in the legs, crotch and seat, no stretch in waist line. 'Stretch Shorts?" I beg to differ Columbia. Man bulge is obvious, just so you know what you are getting into here. Was I sent the wrong color? Can't figure it out. Ordered the Peat color but these shorts are olive green not a brownish peat color at all like the photo and there is no olive green choice on Amazon. Very strange. A disappointment overall. Cut is NOT for athletic builds but for thinner men. I would have exchanged them for the next size up but the jump was 2 inches to a 36" and I hate wearing shorts with a belt that are too big. Sloppy look. Probably would be perfect for me if they came in a 35" waist but Columbia does not offer them. The length is good at a 10" inseam and is not too short or too long for hiking, etc. The thin material is welcome in the summer but I would not wear these in the Spring or Autumn because of their thinness. If you are using these for hiking, climbing, cycling, etc., I doubt these would last long due to their thinness but for casual wear around town they would be fine.

Very comfy.
Light, comfortable, stretchy. Fabric is very very light with a mesh facing inside, perfect for hot summer wear. Somewhat snug across the hips, but it stretches enough that it's OK - if somewhat immodest. Think male camel toe if you have muscular build. Nice belt loops, nice horizontal hip pockets and flat zippered cargo pocket. EIGHT INCH SHORTS! Yes! finally the silly fashion trend of making too-long shorts which confine each step is being reversed somewhat. But...NO CLOSURE on either back pocket. That's a no-go. Don't want to loose my wallet while crouched over a cat hole in the woods. Otherwise they'd be a keeper. However, at the their rather high price, this makes them a return.

These shorts are great. Compared to the original Silver Ridge shorts
These shorts are great. Compared to the original Silver Ridge shorts, differences I would point out are there is no Velcro to close the back pockets (a big deal for me) and they do not come with a belt. As for the review that says they are too thin, this is the entire reason I buy Columbia! Thickness and durability are not the same and I've had several pairs of the original Silver Ridge that are the same material last a very long time through some pretty rough activities. They dry very quickly and are extremely comfortable.

Easy button Operation
The fit is right. How easy it is to operate the button and how light the shorts are are the two reasons I buy them. Over time the zipper handles break off but I don't really care since I never really use the pockets. Should be noted that it takes some time for these to break; probably in the wash.

Great hiking shorts!
Love these shorts! Functioned just as I'd hoped. I bought them for an excursion that involved both hiking and sliding down waterfalls. They were perfect for the 75-degree weather, and dried pretty quickly after getting wet (and were very comfortable even while they were soaked). The material feels light, but durable. The fit is stylish while being practical for activity, but they don't have the stretch that some folks might expect since "stretch" is in the name of these shorts. Pockets are a little shallow, and only one is zippered. I wish a nylon belt was included; I grabbed the one from my Silver Ridge long pants.
