Bamboo Accents Traditional Japanese Rocking Water Fountain, Outdoor Water Fountain, 12” Shishi Odoshi Design, Smooth Split-Resistant Bamboo Creates a Captivating Outdoor Accent

These seem easy enough to make so I thought about making one myself but finding bamboo turned out to be harder than I thought in New England. There are likely better versions than this one but for the money this one has worked out really well. I decided I wanted to use a solar pump so I swapped out the included pump for a solar powered pump. My first install didn’t work as the catch basin was too small and the water level fell too fast. I ended up getting a 20”x32” x 9” high tub and burying it, putting a grate on top in which I cut a “door” so I could access the pump if I needed, and then I sat the whole rocker base on two Pieces of bamboo garden stake across the tub so that any water dripping down the fountain came back into the catch basin. I then covered the grate with smooth round stones and did a perimeter of larger rocks to contain the smaller stones and keep dirt from getting into the grate. So far it works great. We had to cover one square of the solar panel to get the pump to give just the right flow. The sound is probably the weaker point of this fountain—it’s a little blunt without the hollow sound you would get from a larger version that has a longer tube with more bamboo sections. But we didn’t want something too big and decided it was a pretty small difference. Some reviewers talk about the bamboo getting water-logged. Haven’t experienced that yet but it’s only been a few weeks. ...one year later, just reinstalled it after putting the pump and fountain away for the winter. Still working great. ….now 2023, so it’s been through 4 seasons. Still a great rocker fountain. I do take it out and put it away each winter so I’m sure that helps sustain it. It’s looking a little weathered and there are some external cracks in the surface of the rocket but they don’t go through to the inside so there are no leaks. Given the price I paid back in 2020 this was a no brainer and has worked out great. Would definitely buy again. Updated June 2025: it has now been 5 years and the rocker fountain is still going strong (though I’ve been through a couple of solar-powered pumps in the meantime). I do take it in each winter and reinstall in the spring. But otherwise it’s done really well. I’d still recommend it.

Found that after bamboo becomes saturated, it stops going up & down. Solution: hang a small weight or object from decorative band near front of main piece & it continues to rock beautifully.

I bought this same one about 15 years ago, but this new one cracked, rotted and leaked within 2 weeks of normal use. Returned.

Our first koi pond was decimated by a large bird (I never saw it, but my wife thinks it was a heron). So when we had a new, larger koi pond constructed, we decided to purchase this pump to frighten away any large predatory birds. We also thought that it would be a nice addition to the pond. I can't speak to its ability to scare away birds, but none have appeared, so hopefully it's working. As far as a pleasant addition to the koi pond, it serves that purpose well. It's a charming accent and adds to the beauty and serenity of the pond. It's simple to assemble and position, and the pump is small and easily disguised. The only shortcoming, and why I'm only giving it four stars is that the pump is a little difficult to adjust and water leaks off the back end if the volume is set too high. This doesn't cause any major problem for us but may be an issue with other installations. All in all, we're very happy with it and are glad we purchased it.

Love the fountain, however, after 4.5 months of use the tubing within the bamboo is has developed small holes or cracks without a way to replace damaged tubing. Contacted seller today 11/21 let’s see what happens.
