No more character trays.
Between my friends and I, we own 14 other Dice Throne characters for our game nights. We recently got into the game around Christmas and when I saw the X-Men were coming I preordered them without hesitation because the X-Men are my favorite superheroes and we've been really happy with the overall quality of the Dice Throne characters. However that has seemingly changed. I'll go down the list.First off, there have been some bizarre choices with the characters. That is forgivable but the art really has an AI art feel. Not the biggest gripe but worth saying.Secondly, the character boards no longer fold up and no longer have any art or anything on the back of them. It feels like a cost cutting measure. The main problem here is these characters feel distinct from the others that we own. The main appeal of Dice Throne was the variety of characters that would smoothly interchange with one another.Third, the characters no longer come with dice tray character storage boxes. Again, the previous appeal of the game was passing out characters to choose from and now with these characters you pass a large box that just feels like it doesn't mesh with the others. I don't think it's the end of the world but for our group, I don't think I'll see anyone using these characters unless we have an X-Men night. The fourth issue we had is now there is assembly required. Previously we loved the combat point dials and character ho dials but I guess moving forward they want you to assemble them yourself.Overall, if you only plan on buying this set I think you'll have a good time. If you liked the idea of a growing roster with consistent game design and ease of use, then maybe pass up the X-Men character boxes or wait for them to go on sale.
