Q: Does this model replace the older Somfy model 74300 12 volt 20 rpm motor?

I believe this is the upgraded version of the somfy 30 wirefree Ref#1003128 is an Ultraquiet motor with a rechargeable internal lithium battery, fits 1-1/2 tubes. Hope this helps.

Q: How do I know what shades are compatible with this?

I bought 10 of this (#1003310) from shidora to retrofit manual roller shades for windows (34“ x 58 1/4") and double doors (69 3/4" by 78 1/2") in my house . I bought another 4 Somfy ST30 (# 1003128) motors (a slightly shorter version) to fit my narrower windows. they are both very quiet and easy to set up. I am comfortable to use this motor for all roller shades as roller shades are generally light enough for the sonesse 30 motors to drive. However, I am not sure this motor (senesse 30) is powerful enough for a roman shade. I have one roman shade in my house. I was advised to take Somfy Sonesse 40 instead. roman shades are much heavier for a motor to drive. sonesse 30 may not be powerful enough. I bought irismo motor to drive my curtains. you can use the same somfy remote and mylink to operate all somfy motors.

Q: I want to retrofit some existing shades with inside mounts. How far would this stick out of the existing tube?

I retrofitted 10 manual roller shades with this motor, I retrofitted another 4 roller shade with a short version of sonesse 30 motor. all of them are inside mount. it is a simple drop in replacement.

Q: are mounting brackets included ?

typically no. if you are trying to retrofit an existing roller shade, you don't need new brackets. your existing brackets should work fine. the vendor should provide crown, adapters and etc. I would strongly recommend to buy a charger and ask for a charger extension cord. if you are working on a new roller shade, then you will need more than just brackets. you will need a 1 1/2"tube, and select your favorite fabric.
