Has the overstating the mileage issue been addressed and corrected?

The PITPAT runs on accelerometers - just like a basic pedometer.  The mileage is calculated by multiplying the movement by an average distance of a dogs gate.  You can imagine the variability involved between different size dogs.  In respect to the calculation of running, it only counts running if the dog is running for the majority of a 5 minute block of time.  If your dog runs for 2 minutes and then stops, it will not count that time as running.  It's not perfect, but its pretty good.  If you want absolute mileage, then a GPS tracker would be a better, and an assuredly more expensive, solution.  I have had a couple of other pet trackers, and the PITPAT has outlasted them all.

The PitPat does not use GPS to show location or calculate distance. It estimates the distance covered by your dog based on their steps and the average stride length of your dog's breed.

I'm actually unsure.  You do need wifi to download the data, but I'm not sure if it collects data in place without cell service.  It's actually a very cool monitor.  I can tell if my pup has been active or not when I'm away.
