*The limited deluxe edition includes foil and spot gloss* By #1 New York Times bestselling author Ana Huang comes a new emotional and steamy sports romance. Vincent has played to win his whole life. But nothing prepares him for Brooklyn―the woman who challenges him, grounds him, and changes everything. And this time, losing isn't an option. He has to play by the rules...but for her, he'd break them all. As the captain of Blackcastle Football Club and one of the highest-paid athletes in the game, Vincent DuBois should be on top of the world. But when his fame brings danger to his doorstep, he finds himself in a nightmare scenario―sharing a flat with his coach's daughter, knowing full well she's far too big a temptation for him to resist. When his new living arrangements escalate into a bet that throws them even closer together, he realizes he's in deeper trouble than he thought. He's always played to win―but for her, he might just risk it all. *** As a sports nutritionist and the daughter of a legendary coach, Brooklyn Armstrong is used to dealing with hotshot athletes. However, no player gets under her skin like Vincent, her best friend's infuriatingly cocky (and gorgeous) brother. She left California hoping for a fresh start, and he's the kind of distraction she doesn't need. Now, he's sleeping in the room next to hers while her career is up in the air and her defenses are crumbling. But no matter how many sparks fly between them, a relationship between the captain and the coach's daughter could never work…could it? Tropes to love: Sizzling sports romance Best friend's brother Roommates Forced proximity Captain x coach's daughter Review: Wonderful Read - Loving this series so much! Huang is one of my favorite romance authors and though I usually don't enjoy sports romance The Striker and The Defender changed my mind and broadened my horizons. The characters are fun to follow, have some depth, exude sexiness, and are relatable despite the fame. I finished the book in a day! Review: Another Score for Ana Huang - The Defender by Ana Huang Gods of the Game Series – Book 2 Ana Huang’s The Defender, the second book in her Gods of the Game series, continues to follow an elite football club in England—and it absolutely delivers. This player/coach’s daughter romance features Vincent DuBois and Brooklyn Armstrong, and I really enjoyed both main characters. Their chemistry is undeniable, and the forbidden dynamic adds an extra layer of tension that makes their story even more compelling. The side characters are just as fun and engaging, adding depth and humor to the overall story. The spice level was perfectly balanced, and the added stalker subplot forces Vincent and Brooklyn to confront their true feelings for one another in a way that raises the stakes and keeps the pages turning. Ana Huang already has me counting down to the third and final book in the series, The Keeper, which is set to be released later this year.

Underwhelmed
It physically pains me to give The Defender 3 stars, because I LOVE all of Ana's books, and was excited for Vincent's story. But it just fell flat for me. Brooklyn and Vincent's banter was always the same, and some things were just too predictable. I'll still continue to read the series, I just hope the rest of the books are better!

Read this if you DARE
I cried so hard when this story ended. This might be by far my FAVORITE Ana Huang book. Brooklyn and Vincent’s story will live on in my heart and head for a while now. The rawness of the backgrounds of these two characters touched home in my heart; particularly Vincent’s story. As an adoptee, the unknowing of birth parents and what they’re like have always been in the back of my mind and I loved how Ana wrote these feelings into Vincent’s story! I cannot wait for Noah and Carina’s story and how she is the girl he shouldn’t fall for. Thank you again for writing such a touching story! It’s one of my highlighted books of February so far!

Loved it!
Starting any book by Ana is always easy because I know I’m going to love it — and this one was no exception. Honestly, I’ve been looking forward to this story for a while, and it did not disappoint! This time, I was completely entertained by the playful back-and-forth between Vincent and Brooklyn 😂 Their chemistry? Off the charts. Brooklyn, an intern at Blackcastle FC (and yes, the coach’s daughter!), finds herself tangled up with Vincent — the team’s captain. What starts as a simple roommate situation born out of a dare turns into so much more, and I was hooked every step of the way. Brooklyn is such a strong, determined woman carving out her own career path, and I love how Vincent supports her while still letting her shine. Their relationship felt both sweet and empowering. And I can’t forget the rest of the crew — the team and the girls absolutely stole the show! The group dynamic, the banter, the chaotic group chat moments… I was laughing so much 🤣 Ana really knows how to make her characters feel like a family you want to hang out with. If you love sports romance with heart, humor, and chemistry that leaps off the page — this one’s a total winner. ⚽💖

Nice Sports Romance Book!
I bought this before reading it and I’m happy with the purchase so far. The cover has a fun sporty style and the metallic details look great in person. The inside artwork is also really nice. The book arrived well packaged and in perfect condition. It definitely met my expectations and looks great displayed with my other books.

A captivating workplace, sports romance
The Defender is book two in the Gods of the Game series and follows the story of Vincent DuBois (caption of Blackcastle) and Brooklyn (Sports Nutrition intern AND the Coach’s Daughter). When Vincent’s fame starts to affect his safety, he finds himself suddenly sharing a flat with the coach’s daughter. Vincent goes from a flashy life as the highest paid player on the team to living simply in Brooklyn’s flat. This is one part of the story I really loved. While Vincent is a wealthy character, like we have come to love from Ana’s books, the story felt like it didn’t have all the flash and opulence of the previous books. There were moments that did portay that wealth but I really enjoyed this vibe as I felt it made Vincent and Brooklyn a more likeable and relatable couple. The Defender perfectly blended sports with the romance. Both Vincent and Brooklyn worked for the same team but it felt like there was a nice separation between their work and home life and the story had a nice focus on both aspects. Their home life felt cosy and relatable, with some great banter between their two. The Defender was an easy, bingeworthy read that ticks the boxes for me with a sports romance. This book really built upon the team environment from The Striker and it was wonderful to see the friendship that has developed between Vincent and Asher.

Such a talented writer
Ana Huang is one of my favorite authors. I love the way she gives us emotionally intense and softless stories — and plot twist: she did it again. “The Defender” is the second book in the Gods of the Game series. It’s different from Ana’s other books, but I’m really enjoying this series too. I love the lighter moments, the feel-good vibes, the found family — every character has their own charm. But in this book, I also really loved the mysterious atmosphere surrounding the investigation around Vincent, which might lead to some dramatic consequences… 🔍 What I love most about this book, without hesitation, is Vincent and Brooklyn. I adore them both, together and individually. They’re sweet, bright, funny, loyal, and emotionally attached in such a genuine way. I loved their personalities, and my heart hurt for them and their family issues. So many moments were emotional and heartbreaking — yet still incredibly soft. The way Vincent and Brooklyn take care of each other was absolutely perfect. 🥺 I loved all the tropes used, and they were executed perfectly and at the right pace. I really appreciated the maturity and the chemistry between Vincent and Brooklyn. It takes time, but it feels so natural. I laughed, felt happy for them, and found them absolutely adorable. The balance was just right. But despite all of this, Asher and Scarlett remain my favorites for now. I was missing a tiny bit of “starlight” that I can’t quite explain — but nothing major, because I still really enjoyed my read! 💙

Addictive Sports Romance
The Defender (Deluxe Edition) is such an entertaining and emotional read. The chemistry between the characters is amazing, and the tension throughout the story keeps you hooked from beginning to end. I really enjoyed the sports romance aspect mixed with the forced proximity and best friend’s brother tropes. Vincent and Brooklyn have a great dynamic, and their banter and emotional moments make the story even more engaging. The pacing felt smooth, and the romance developed really well throughout the book. The deluxe edition itself is also beautiful, with special cover details that make it feel extra special for fans of the series. Overall, a fantastic romance novel with strong characters, emotional depth, and plenty of chemistry. Definitely a must-read for Ana Huang fans!
