Tomcat Rat Snap Trap 0361710- Pack of 4 Review: Simple, cheap but VERY effective! - Excellent product. These traps beat anything you can buy for effectiveness, regardless of price. These traps are so inexpensive one can throw them away with captured vermin if you don’t particularly care to clean the trap to reuse. (Very reusable) Four issues to be aware of (not defects) 1. These traps are very powerful, you MUST bait them with the trap closed per instructions, or risk serious injury to your hand. I think a triggered trap could easily break a finger or worse. They are designed to kill the critter instantly with a crushing snap-action. 2. Sometimes, but rarely, the trap will capture a critter by its paw or tail, and the critter will chew off the affected appendage. It’s a grisly sight. Of the 15+ critters caught this far, two had this issue. Most die instantly. 3. Do not put these traps near bird feeders or any pet-traveled area. Non-vermin animals may attempt to eat the bait and can be killed or gravely injured. 4. Chunky peanut butter is the best and simplest bait-food to deal with. Easy to load and clean, and vermin love it. Note: Ants will find your traps no matter what. I recommend placing cinnamon around the traps. Cinnamon does not deter critters. But it does repel insects. Review: Great traps - Love these for the price, easy to set up and bait!

Rats be gone!
Thes are the absolute best mouse and rat traps ever! I purchased these before and they were so good I hunted until I found them again and am not disappointed! Do not let kids or pets around these! They are strong and fast! I have exterminated 10 to 20 rats with these traps and I highly recommend them!! We used dry cat food as bait and dry dog food! Works great!

these WORK!!
These traps WORK!!! Had an "issue" hired a company who set their traps. Zero results. I bought tomcat rat traps. Rat snap got them all! Just wish I hadn't spent a fortune on the company who were "experts".

Most effective way to get rats, but you need to use some tricks
I have tried EVERYTHING under the sun to trap rats around our property. My wife has a dozen bird feeders and we go through about 50 lbs of sunflower seeds, peanuts, and other kinds of bird feed every month. A lot of that ends up on the ground and it is an irresistible attractant for mice and rats. We also have a couple of wood piles and a thick stand of bamboo that seem to be ideal habitat for them. Long story short, we have a constant and ongoing battle with rats. I've tried glue traps, electronic zappers, poison bait, etc. They ALL have negatives, but these tomcat traps are the most reliable, most effective, and the easiest to overcome the negative aspects of any other option. Because we have so many birds in the yard, I have to be VERY careful that I don't inadvertently kill them in a trap. We also have a lot of night time visitors OTHER than rats (possums, skunks, raccoons, voles, etc). This makes glue traps a no-go for outside. With poisons, you have two major issues to deal with - (1) you can't control where the rats die and (2) the dead rats can poison other beneficial animals (and pets!). So poisons are pretty much also a no-go other than in extreme circumstances where I need to quickly knock down a sudden population explosion and I can stay on top of things very carefully. With these "snap traps" there are a couple of tricks that make them MUCH more effective and more useful. First, you MUST fasten them down somehow - I don't recommend a tether - affixing them to a stable surface is more effective. If I'm setting them up on the ground (like near a wood pile) I will screw them to a long 2 x 4 and then bury the 2x4 so that the trap(s) are flush to the ground. Second, you need to "pre-load" the traps by pushing down the trigger paddle until it is at the point JUST before it goes off. This takes some practice, but it makes the traps MUCH more effective since a much lighter touch will cause them to go off. I've studied the way the rats approach these traps using a game camera (motion activated with night vision) and they are extremely adept at removing bait without triggering the traps unless you take this step to pre-load the trigger. The downside of this approach is that rats that would otherwise get away will get trapped. This means that about 30% of the time a rat will get caught by a leg or will not be killed because it doesn't' have to be standing inside the trap for it to fire. In these situations, it is very helpful if you (or someone else in the house) is able to quickly and humanely dispatch the rat so that it does not continue to suffer. (Not to be macabre, but I usually use a piece of 1.5" dowel as a club or use gardening shears as a guillotine depending on the situation.) Bottom line for the money, these traps are extremely effective, durable (unlike expensive zappers), reliable, inexpensive, and rain-proof!

Roof Rat Infestation - These Traps have worked well
I have a townhouse in Arizona. Our neighbors were hoarders, drug dealers, and drug users. Their living conditions were conducive to housing a large amount of roof rats. I had lived next door to them for a year and never once saw a rat. Then they got foreclosed on and as the new owner cleaned up the house, the rats scattered to my part of the townhouse. I called an exterminator and noticed that they were using these snap traps in my attic. Their advice was to use gloves when handling the traps as the rats may be repelled by human scent. I ordered a pack of 4 from Amazon and some gloves. Roof rats are most likely to come out at night. Since my neighbors had holes in their roof, rat exclusion steps weren't really do-able until they sealed their side. I go outside around dusk and note where the activity is. Then I move my traps to the places they were. I didn't have a ton of success round the back tree, but once they moved to the front where my grills were, I put traps on the grill shelves and along the floor by where the activity was. I've been averaging like 4 KIA a day in the heavy days and I can rest assured that I will kill them even though I see them around the area. Peanut Butter has been working great. Note that I have had my traps licked clean quite a few times. Another user mentioned to dab some on the sensor closest to the metal spring in the back of the trap. That is probably great advice. Sometimes these traps miss the kill and snag a back leg instead. They can carry these traps at surprising distances, so you may want to consider tying them down to something. You will have to kill them by hitting them over the head. Long story short, I've caught more rats in these traps with peanut butter than my exterminator. Like WAY more. Great product, but you should do some research on killing rats and rat exclusion. They are very smart creatures, but not smart enough to get caught if you're willing to put the time in. Best of luck.

Have now set two of these traps on three/four occasions. Used peanut butter as a bait (rats love it) but not once has either trap triggered and the bait has gone. Great feeding stations but not traps.
