I'm sad to report that I'm a repeat purchaser of this product. Let me be clear, NOT sad about the product itself (it's a lifesaver, or at least a NOSE saver!) but sad that I NEEDED to buy this product more than one time. I'm a live and let live kind of person with animals. As long as they stay OUT of my house. Want to traipse and frolic out in the yard, trees or bushes? Have at it. However my hospitality ends when they try to invade my home. That's just not very neighborly. About a year ago, right about the same time of year, as the temperatures started getting chilly outside, we noticed a, for lack of better words, a PUTRIDLY RANCID smell coming from the general vicinity of one corner of our basement. We followed our sniffers and scoured the entire area but could find no evidence of any physical issue. But the smell got worse by the day. We suspected something had gone to eternal rest within our walls but was just in such a location that we could not find it without ripping apart walls. "Experts" told us that it would take a bit of time but that the smell would eventually go away as the, um, at rest "carcass" dried up. But let me tell you, that smell was, um NOT pleasant. I let my fingers do the walking, across the keyboard, and I came upon this very item. Read a few reviews and literally just ordered it on the spot. It came quickly, I unscrewed the top of the jar and unceremoniously place the jar right there in the corner of the smelly basement. I kid you not, by the next morning, the gaggingly putrid smell was ...better. Not completely eliminated but obviously better. Could be a combination of the critter going through it's "normal process" but I don't care. There was hope that we would hopefully be able to go down there again without having to hold our breath and plug our noses. Sure enough, over the next days and week, the smell quickly seemed to dissipate. Hurray. Giant HURRAY!!! The whole stinky episode faded in our memory .... until this week. Yup. After a brief cool down of temperatures outside, the outdoor rodent community must have decided "Oh hey there seems to be an abode worthy of wintering within. Let's send frail and sickly Grandpa Mouse in to scope it out!" (mind you we have searched for possible holes on the exterior of our house but can find nothing...but obviously we are not rodent sized with keen senses of direction & bodies which can apparently squeeze through minute cracks unseen to the human eye). And Grandpa Mouse obviously lost his will to live and laid down somewhere deep within our walls to join his ancestor of last year. That's my story and I'm sticking to it as I do not even want to entertain the concept that there are actual living critters roaming ALIVE in our walls! But ah yes, that undeniable stench! It's back. And building. So without hesitation & at warp speed, I flew to my computer to look up my purchase history and bought, not one, but TWO of this magic jar of stench ridder! One to place out immediately and one to have at the ready in case more of the mouse family decide to come look for Grandpa Mouse. Bottom line. Buy this stuff. It makes stenches go away.

It works great. Really, really fantastic. CREATE ADJUSTABLE STRENGTH ODOR REMOVAL --------------------------------------- A good approach for bathrooms that get a lot of use: 1. Flip it onto it's lid (gel out of container); 2. Cut "vent" strips out of bottom of container with a razor; 3. Leave gel on lid, put container on top. It's now sitting upside down. 4. Lift container to expose ALL the gel for faster odor removal, put container back to cover leaving only vents for slower, longer-lasting odor removal. Alternatively, just switch from a partially off/fully off lid, but this will only expose the top of the gel, and so won't achieve strong/fast odor removal. TOP TIPS: -------- 1. Consider using less product and/or adding a scented product to save money if you have strong, continuous smells in a large area. Where that is the case you'll need so much of this product that it's own slight odor won't have space to neutralize itself (which it does otherwise). 2. Save money by buying in bulk - Cheapest: Buy a case at Goodbyeodors.com - 5-lbs via Amazon Bad Air Sponge Odor Remover 3. Flip it out of the container onto its lid, or scoop bits of the product out onto pieces of cardboard in the space when you first use it. Experiment to determine the least you need to make the smell acceptable/gone. HOW MUCH SHOULD I USE? ---------------------- Take into consideration: ' Space: Full rooms with tough odors need extra, small spaces with minor odors just open the container ' Heat/air flow: The product will evaporate much faster if there is excess heat or a lot of air flow. ' Source: A continuous source of strong odors (such as wafting smoke, cat litter box) will require more of the product. ' Size of source: One pet accident is a small area. A smoke-damaged room has odor particles in EVERYTHING, and will take more product HOW CAN I MAKE IT STRONGER/WORK FASTER? --------------------------------------- Use plenty of scoops onto paper plates/pieces of cardboard and leave around in worst odor areas. As it shrinks/dries up, cut pieces in half to expose more fresh odor-fighting chemical if you don't want its effectiveness to fade. HOW TO MAKE IT LAST LONGER/COST LESS? ------------------------------------- Consider buying the 5-lb bucket (link at top). Consider using less and also using a scented product of some kind. Keep it away from areas that are ' Hot ' Dry ' Have lot of air flow WHAT'S THE BEST STRATEGY FOR CAT LITTER? ---------------------------------------- DISPOSAL: If you can't take it out right away, consider a diaper pail. Most have a slot inside the lid for some kind of scent disk. Attach a piece of wire or fabric mesh (twist ties work fine) to the scent holder area to make hanging spot to scoop some bad air sponge into. THE SPACE: Buy the 5-lb (link at top) version to save money over time, and start with more scoops spread around than you think you need, then cut back to test. WILL I SMELL THE PRODUCT ITSELF? -------------------------------- The product has a slight slight citrus-y smell that will actually neutralize itself in most uses. But: YOU WILL SMELL IT IF: ' It's less than a foot away from your nose in an open area (or 2-3 feet if you expose a lot of product); ' You use a lot of the product; ' It's in a very hot area or in an area with a lot of air flow; ' Air flow occasionally blows from the product towards your nose; WHAT ABOUT REALLY, REALLY BAD ODORS? ------------------------------------ The worse the odor and the larger the space, the more of the product you'll need to scoop out and leave around. But it really works well, though you may have to use a lot of the product. TIPS FOR MILDEW --------------- Windows over time can get water damage and mold, so consider using the sponge near windows. Also, read the next tip. WHAT DOES IT WORK LEAST WELL ON? -------------------------------- A material with mold/mildew is just like having a smoker lighting one up: both create new smell and spread it into the air continuously. Also, even after finding and removing/using chemicals (bleach, special paint) on mildew-infected area, it tends over time to have gotten into everything in the space affected (like smoke), so you need more product than you think you do. COMPLETELY ELIMINATING TEMPORARY ODORS -------------------------------------- Use as much as you need to eliminate odors, but keep using it for awhile EVEN AFTER the smell appears gone. What happens is that odors near the surface spread fastest and are neutralized first, but deeper odors still exist. If you stop using it too soon, a small amount of deeper odor will slowly spread, and so you may need to use the sponge again. Alternatively, use it until the odor is gone, then use again if smell seems to "come back." Still, 2-3 uses should permanently eliminate most odors. TOXIC? ------ Company say it is not, and that it's even safe to eat. But if you use such a large amount that you can smell the product strongly over a long period of time, you are probably getting more of the chemical than anyone has been tested against. However, one reviews says "This product uses the same chemical, para-dichlorobenzene, that is used in urinal cakes, heavy-duty industrial cleaners, some plug-in air fresheners, and as the main ingredient in mothballs." OTHER PROBLEMS -------------- CHECK ON ARRIVAL: It should fill the container and look not at all shriveled when you open it. If it is shriveled, return it right away--it's been partially used up, probably by accidental exposure to air. Remember, continuous strong sources in larger spaces (mildew, new smoke, lots of cats using a litter box, etc.) will need a lot more product than you might think. As well as large spaces that have been contaminated with strong odors--although once they are gone, you will need no or very little product ongoing.

This stuff works! Wow. I am impressed. It's been ten days since I've had this in my pull out trash can cabinet. And it definitely is absorbing various trash smells. How do I know? Because yes, it has a distinct scent. It's not overpowering, but it is noticeable. And I'm glad I'm noticing it and not the smell of trash. It smells sort of medicinal in a an herbal way and slightly like lemony licorice. Now, I personally do not like licorice, but the scent of this Bad Air Sponge doesn't bother me. I didn't give this product 5 stars simply because it's not the most attractive deodorizer. Like other reviewers, I would love to put But with that being said, I really don't need it to be when it's hiding in a cabinet. *It didn't spill or leak in shipping to me, it's a pretty solid lump.

First, let’s talk about the odor of the product. I’m scent sensitive and I know a lot of you are too, so let’s break it down. As many other reviews have already noted, the odor of this product doesn’t last long once the product is in use, maybe 5 days. This is important to really hear and understand if you’re truly sick of whatever crap smell you’re currently living with. Five days living with the light smell of this product was NOTHING compared to the 5 months of frustration I endured living with the stale cigarette smell coming through the vents from my neighbors apartment. The aroma of this product instantly reminded me of those vintage looking tins of French lavender candies. I had a friend from Quebec that ate them all through high school and always had a tin in her backpack. To me, this product smells exactly like those candies, lightly of lavender and a bit sweet like a hard candy shell. Is it my favorite smell? No. Do I want my entire apartment to smell like this stuff everyday? Of course not. But it was a pleasant enough smell that I could endure it for 5 days to see if the product worked, and it’s a pleasant enough smell for the rare occasion, about 3x a week, that I get a slight whiff of it when I walk by the products location in my hallway. I’ve been using this product for about a month now. I’ve had no headaches or sinus congestion from this product, and many fragrances and chemical products can have that effect on me with long term use. Second, let’s break down the odor problem I was experiencing. As I mentioned, a strong stale cigarette smell from the neighboring unit kept permeating my apartment through both the electrical panel and the shared laundry vents. I’d been struggling with this hideous smell for months using two air purifying machines that used up about $30 a month in electricity, and another $30 a month in filter replacements. This was an improvement, but it was loud and expensive and had me tripping over one of the air purifying machine that was placed in the small entryway of my apartment. At some point in my battle, I decided to try to further diminish the amount of odor coming in through the electrical panel by taping an air filter screen over the panel door with easy to remove blue painters tape, and then a thick tarp taped over that (this comes off in about 3 seconds in the event of an emergency). This worked wonders for reducing the smell in that half of my apartment, but even with an air purifier running 24/7 inside my laundry closet, the old cigarette smell from that area would waft into my kitchen and living room often enough to make me really pissed off. That’s when I went on a more serious search for an odor absorber. I’d already tried a couple of unscented odor removing gel products that definitely helped the air purifier in the laundry closet to be more effective, but if I turned off the air purifier the cig smell would return in a couple of days. Reading the reviews for the Bad Air Sponge it became clear it might remove the cig odor all on its own without the addition of the air purifier machine, and not leave a lingering daily fragrance after the first week of use. It was worth $14 bucks for me to try it, and it worked! The stale cigarette smell was completely gone after 3 days using Bad Air Sponge. Here’s what I did: I bought just one jar to try and first placed it in my entry where the stale cig smell tended to linger in the hallway near the bedroom and bathroom. The fragrance of the Bad Air Sponge was light but noticeable at this point and I left it in this location for 2 days until the cig smell was gone and the product aroma was diminishing somewhat. Then I placed the Bad Air Sponge inside the laundry closet on top of the stacked laundry machines and turned OFF the air purifier. A day later the cig smell was gone from the closet and the Bad Air Sponge aroma inside the closet was barely noticeable. My apartment has not smelled like stale cigarettes since. The lingering cig smell never returned to my entryway even though the Bad Air Sponge is only in the laundry closet. The laundry closet still has a slight aroma of the Bad Air Sponge, being a small contained area, but it doesn’t bother me. I’m writing this review because I’m back to order another Bad Air Sponge. I’m hoping that having two in the laundry closet will help absorb the occasional strong cooking smells that come through the laundry vents so suddenly that the one Bad Air Sponge just can’t manage it. I know cooking smells are a concern for others in apartment situations, so I’ll update my review with that info in a few weeks.

I originally purchased the Bad Air Sponge for use in a small bedroom that was previously occupied by a male relative. If you have ever lived with males, then you have probably encountered this beast called male body odor. It is this magical aroma that seemingly permeates the room with no remorse. The mattress, carpet and even the wall was no match for this smell, even months later. I was at a loss because candles and scented wall plugins were temporarily masking the scent, but did not seem to have a lasting effect. At a loss, I turned to the internet as most of us do in times of need and found this gem. It’s humorous packaging tickled me and the reviews looked promising so I took the plunge and bought it. After receiving the item, I removed the lid and placed in a central area of the room. The contents inside look like a blue cylindrical blob with dark particles which I suspect may be bits of charcoal. Its aroma was pretty nice too. It smells a little like licorice to me. Letting it do its magic overnight, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this compact little container of odor absorbing blue blob was able to rid the room of the formidable foe that is male body odor. Still, I decided to withhold final judgement until the product was finished. As a test, I decided to remove the blue contents from the inside of the container and rest it atop the lid to see if that made a difference. Oh boy, did it ever! It completely eradicated the smell monster from my guest bedroom. Over time, the blue blob inside began to shrink and shrivel up into what looked like a dried up blue mass of alien skin. It took about 2.5 months of sitting out until I thought it was time to throw away the Bad Air Sponge and its tiny nugget of blue blob. During those 2.5 months, the horrible odor was gone and only a light licorice scent could be smelled. Now was the real test, would it hold up? I can safely say that the room has continued smelling fresh and clean even though I have not replaced the bad air sponge in over a month. One thing to note is that if the smell has been there a very long time, i.e. years, you may have to repurchase this as needed. Suffice it to say, I really like the Bad Air Sponge. It’s easy to use and effective at removing unwanted odor. You can unscrew the lid and leave it on a flat surface to do its job or dump out the contents onto the lid for heavy duty smells. The light licorice smell is pleasant. Plus, whatever the blue stuff inside the container is, it does a good job at clearing up bad smells and is pretty mess free, even when taken out of the container. After the blue content inside dries all up, you can recycle the container and repurchase as necessary. Easy peasy. I highly recommend this product to those looking to rid a space of unseemly scents.

Ordered this odor neutralant to help mask the smell of our woodburning fireplace and chimney in the dining room. In Summer 2011, we had chimney swift birds living in the chimney due to a chimney cap that had come off during a thunderstorm. The chimney sweep cleaned the chimney the following autumn after the birds moved out and installed a new chimney cap. The stinky odor of bird poop and whatever else is still in there is quite noticeable two years later. We don't notice the birds' odor as much in the winter as we are actively using the fireplace. But as soon as it gets warmer outside in Spring, we start to smell the birds' odor. There are no live birds in the chimney, and our flue closes pretty well, but it's not airtight. Per the instructions to make the "sponge" more effective, I took the sponge out of the plastic container and set it on its plastic lid. About 3/4 of the sponge is remaining over about a month. The sponge has a sweet smell which is ok, but not ideal, since we do eat dinner in that room. It might be better in a bathroom, bedroom, garage, or basement area. It works fine when we are not using our range hood exhaust fan which is located over the stove and about 12 feet from the fireplace. When we turn on the fan, then we can smell both the birds' odor and this sponge's fragrance. Never does well with the smell of food cooking or trying to enjoy dinner though without the birds' odor. Not the product's fault because it's doing its job to mask the odor the best it can when the range hood exhaust fan is not being used. I do recommend the product for areas in which you are not eating food. It has cool-looking packaging, too.

In a moment of stupidity, I left a rug covering part of a floor heater in a rental unit. The next day I found the rug mostly melted and the apartment, which previously had a faint cigarette smell, now had an overpowering burnt plastic smell that would make you gag while you were standing OUTSIDE the apartment. Going inside made your eyes water and you literally had to shower and change clothes to remove the smell on you. I started airing out the apartment for several days and using carpet cleaner and washing all of the removable fabrics... and it still stunk to holy hell & I was sick of cleaning. So, I went on amazon & bought 2 of these & 2 of another brand (Nature's Air Sponge Odor Absorber - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006ICYB/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and opened all of them :) I scattered them around the apartment and closed all of the windows & doors and left for a few days. I used the lids to flip the sponge out of the container so more surface area was exposed. After a few days, the smell was drastically reduced, and after a week it was a very faint smell. I haven't been able to see how they have worked long term, as the apartment was rented (thankfully these worked well enough that someone actually wanted to live in there.. before using them, it was difficult to spend more than 30 minutes in the unit without getting nauseous & I had more than one prospective renter turn around at the door as soon as the odor hit them). A few weeks later, a friend had a skunk get in the crawl space under her house. She tried everything to get rid of the smell including hours and hours of cleaning & nothing was having much of an impact on the skunk scent. It was so bad that she could smell it through the floorboards in her house! I told her about these & the next time I saw her, she was amazed at how well they had worked. So, if you have a horrible smelling room or house or car.. TRY THESE!! I don't know how much time these saved me! I'm getting ready to order more of them for other rentals & realized I hadn't reviewed them yet. So I can say I would definitely recommend them because I'm going to order more right after I post this :) Honestly they could raise the price 500% and I wouldn't even hesitate to buy more of them! They are worth every penny

EDIT: OK been a couple weeks now, and this is what I have experienced. It is ONE thing to clear up an old smell of a place you move into or a car you buy, but ANOTHER if it is a constant. If you have neighbors that chain smoke, cook funky-smelling food, you will NEED more of these. I got a total of five and I am getting at least a few more as entry, landing, smoke or food smells coming through walls or from downstairs, well, hard to have too many of these when it's an old house with lots of crevices for smoke or scent to come through. With that said, they help A LOT. These, a small air purifier by my bed, and sealing the common heating vents made a world of difference. __________________________________________________ I got one for 12 and change. At first it seemed really strong, but the scent fades and then it just neutralizes other scents. I live in an 1890's house divided into three separate apartments. Everyone but me chain smokes, two living downstairs, one right next to me and it often smells like I live in a bad diner (what IS he cooking?) I got two orders of the two pack and put one on the upstairs landing, one in the foyer, one next to the connecting wall with the upstairs apartment and one in my kitchen (SO many cracks and crevices and AROMAS and SMOKE rise!). These, getting a small air purifier and closing off the heating vents we share (dry, dusty, smoky hot air, not a fan) has helped IMMENSELY. That and having my neighbors try to be more accommodating and not smoking right under my bedroom, which was really nice of them. Legally, they can smoke wherever they wish. SO FIVE STARS. Not saying these will fix ALL your problems with any odor that arises, but I love they don't MASK, but neutralize. And while they smell pretty strong when you first open them, as long as you don't have them RIGHT by you (for instance, I wouldn't put one on my computer desk), I don't really smell them after a day.

Nothing to not like about "The Sponge". Had what was likely a dead rat stuck between walls in front porch. Space was about 40sf overall so I scooped less than a 1/4 of one jar onto a sheet of foil wrap, blocked the entrance and with 48 hrs.... the smell was gone. Got to love the stuff. The only alternative I was considering was tearing off some of the siding to get it out. Can't say much more than that.

I had heard about these while I was in China and ordered some from Taobao when I was living there, delighted to find these available in the UK, if a little overpriced. Used in the White House and on Amtrak trains, and they work well in the home too. Very good at neutralising odours, a godsend especially since I'm effectively living and working in the same room during COVID.
