Does this small version measure accurately?

Personally I have found this to be just as accurate as a regular tape measure. Without the rewinding!

On retraction is it fast or does it go back in gently, its for my 2 year old grandson who wants a tape measure like his grandpa

If you hold the button in all the time it does go in quickly but do little presses it stops it going in to quickly. But saying that the tape is soft the only thing that might flick back is the end which is plastic. Overall a very nice little tape measure

How does this retract?

Theres a button in the middle of the tape, one press and the tape measure retracts.
