Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine (Oxford Medical Handbooks)

I'm a final year medical student and am only a few short months away from my finals. I have a vast amount to learn, but little time. This book is perfect for my clinical revision. It beautifully summarises common medical and surgical conditions over 1/2 pages, and inlcudes diagrams and pictures too. It's succint but doesn't miss a single crucial detail. What's even more fab is the scholastic writing style, which guides you through the book without being boring or overly complex. Aside from the small size and the fact that it is jam packed with pretty much everything a final year medic should know, I love that it aims to teach more than just medicine. The authors really emphasise the importance of a holistic approach when treating a patient and that medicine goes beyond just diagnosing and treating symptoms. There also a bit of literary knowledge to be gained, with mentions of Sylvia Plath, James Joyce and a poem by Ted hughes... Could it get any better? This is hands down my favourite medical text of all time!

As a Medical Student, this is invaluable! I would absolutely recommend getting this size and format of book (as opposed to the smaller mini-sizes, or electronic version) as the format of the pages is clearer in the physical copy (I have bought both!). Trying to look up a condition on your phone or tablet can be pretty hard to justify if a doctor or patient was to ask you why you are on your phone or tablet! This is good value for money and incredibly helpful for your education and well-being of patients! Summary: incredibly useful and an unbeatable resource for information about such a variety of conditions and system! A must-buy for any medical student (or doctor!).

Gives you a fast and pretty accurate view of many diseases and procedures. Also contains some tables with lab values, which is really useful. It is in pocket size so you can carry it on your medical coat. It spares you so much time, as you don't have to look on other heavier and bigger books or search on the internet. A must have for every medical student, especially for those in the wards.

This is a very useful resource for medical students in their clinical years. It has common and rare conditions which are easy to locate, and some brief summaries of examinations. Its small and light enough to carry with you whilst still holding a lot of information. Its a good starting point and more trustworthy than google, although you will need to use other resources for more detail. I haven't used it quite as much as I'd expected but I'm sure it will come into its own in my final year.

This is the bible for medical students, and contains pretty much everything you will need to know on the wards. Having the most up to date version is not essential, and I really found few differences between this and the previous one. Guidelines change so often that the only way to be truly up to date is to check the current NICE guidelines. For every day use, any vaguely recent version will do.

I bought this late in my career to have a handy up to date reference but it really does not replace longer tomes or information on the internet. Now retired, I no longer need it, but I still use its "big brother" the Concise Oxford Textbook of Medicine for reference.

Every medical student, or student studying other forms of medical science should have one of these. Provides concise, up to date and adequate information about every condition you will come across in the medical profession (excluding the extremely rare and bizarre). Literally carried me through 3rd year (my first clinical year) and I have heard from older year medics it is also a life saver come exam time/that awkward question consultants always seem to ask you on placements. 4th year med student.

Excellent for revision. and You know you can trust the information! I wouldnt recommend this for medical students in non clinical years, as I bought it in 2nd year of medical school (while we were still learning alot of physiology) and it wasnt very useful nor did it aid my learning much to read through this until i was in final year and had learnt it all from other sources first.

Es bleibt nur ein Faktum, das kritisch innehalten läßt - warum, um alles in der Welt, schafft es kein deutscher Verlag ein solches Buch für 25e oder meinetwegen auch 40e herauszubringen?? Es scheint doch möglich zu sein... Ansonsten rundheraus 5 Sterne für Ausstattung, Aktualität und Lesbarkeit. Ein großartiges Buch, für alle vom Studenten bis zum Facharzt.

I bought the 8th edition of this book and it has helped me immensely on the wards! As a medical student I would definitely recommend this pocket book to others!

As a practicing physician in US, I am deeply impressed with content and thoroughness of Oxford handbook of Clinical Medicine. In a way, it also helped me understand key differences in understanding of clinical medicine between health care providers in USA and UK. The US health system is heavily dependent on lab tests and Radiology which tremendously increases the cost of health care and some times results in harm to the patients because of exposure to radiation and side effects of not so necessary medications. This is also reflected in most of the pocket or hand carry medicine books available in US where students and resident physicians are encouraged to practice medicine following various algorithms. Though the idea of this approach is to create more clarity in the minds of the students and help them avoid delay in taking necessary steps in management of patients. However in the practical life, when faced with complex decision making situations or fear of malpractice, this supposed clarity does not work. In contrast to this, in UK, as this book reflects, there is heavy emphasis on clinical symptoms, signs, and skills. Comparing this book with leading books in US such as Washington Manual or Pocket Medicine by Mass. General Hospital clearly show that this book is far superior than others in many areas including pathophysiology, clinical details, clarity of contents, photographs and pictures. The details in the book are easy to remember and are not confusing. One early reviewer has included presence of rare syndrome mentioning in the book as the "cons" of the book. Actually, this is a big " pros" of the book as it helps you think outside the box when things do not fit in to every day clinical observation. I would suggest the authors and publishers to keep it in next editions and possibly expand it. I highly recommend this book to all practising internal medicine physicians in US. This will strengthen their clinical knowledge and off course while managing patients, these physicians will have opportunity to study comparative disease management practices in UK. The only down side of the book is that it is available only in print format. I hope the publishers will have this available to us in Kindell edition as well in future.

Un livre de référence pour la médecine interne (pour l'interne med mais pas seulement) qui est très pratique (car très portable). j'ai les 2 dernières éditions pour vous dire....

Un must per chi voglia avere sempre in tasca le principali patologie che un clinico si può trovare a trattare, il tutto è esposto in modo pragmatico e schematico, ideale per un ripasso rapido. Nota per studenti: la fisiologia e la fisiopatologia ovviamente non sono affrontate in modo esaustivo in quanto il target del manuale sono medici o al massimo studenti alle prese con l'esame finale di medicina interna. La lingua non è un ostacolo insormontabile: il pratico glossario nelle prime pagine permette di capire abbreviazioni e sigle proprie della terminologia anglosassone e dopo un po ci si fa la mano. Rifarei questo acquisto mille volte.
