Review: How can two books hold so much info? - I've been a fan of Titanic ever since I first watched James Cameron's 'Titanic' when I was one (in 1997). When I spotted this book and looked at reviews for previous editions, I just knew I had to have it. At first I was surprised at how big and heavy these books are, but this is forgiven because the amount of information in these 'Titanic bibles' is simply staggering. It even has details on the holders for the bog roll! I never even thought such information existed. Until now that is. They may be expensive at £120, but the sheer volume of knowledge on this incredible vessel definitely justifies the price for me. I'd never be able to find even a fraction of the info and photographs in this collection online. They only came today (21st January 2017) so I've only had a quick glance (45 minutes or so). I'm already impressed with what i've read and seen. Can't wait to really have a look at them. Review: The Holy Grail - This is the holy grail of information on the Titanic if your interested in the facts, the concept, constrsuction, design and everything relevant to the physicallity that was the ship. Should you be interested in the story of the ship be it the sinking or the lives of those on board this book will help you to understand things which you may not but ultimately this is not a light hearted purchase for someone who is passionately interested in the subject. The two books as a whole are astonishing both in the wealth of information it contains and the spread of topics it covers.

Magnificent ship, magnificent book.
This was part of my son's 50th birthday present. He is over the moon with it, having a life-long fascination with all things Titanic. He treasures it to the extent he has yet ( 5 months later ) to break the cellophane sealing the book for fear it will begin to devalue ! ! ! He'll take the plunge before long and we'll have a little celebration ( like Prince Philip cutting the ribbon to open a new project ! ) If you have in-depth interest in all the technical details down to the material and manufacturer of the last screw and all matters Titanic this fabulous book is for you. ( P.S. it's very heavy )

A must for the Titanic Enthusiast
This publication is an absolute must for anyone with an interest in the RMS Titanic. The quality is outstanding throughout. I have a close family association with the ship and every word, every detail will be studied. The authors have made an outstanding contribution in keeping this magnificent ship in our memory.

If the most in-depth 'Titanic' technical reference in your collection is Tom McCluskie's "Anatomy of the Titanic," or a reprint of the famous Shipbuilder special, you really owe yourself an upgrade. "Titanic: The Ship Magnificent" is, without doubt, the most detailed examination of the physical attributes of the ship currently available. They're the most in-depth look at any single ship I've ever owned, going far beyond even the best volumes in the "Anatomy of the Ship" series. While Volume 1 covers the structural, technical, and mechanical aspects of the ship, Volume 2 presents an extensive "guided tour" of the ship, focusing on the main passenger and crew areas. I personally enjoy volume 1 more, although anyone not seriously interested in bitumastic coatings, shell plating, and Kilroy's stoking indicators will find it an intimidating read. More than 1,600 photographs, technical diagrams, and period advertisements are spread across 37 chapters. The level of detail is absolutely incredible; you'll find diagrams of each watertight bulkhead, the dimensions of every railing and sidelight, a list of every piece of galley and pantry equipment onboard, dimensioned drawings of each type of window, detailed explanations of how the electric plant and ventilation systems worked, and so on, to almost mind-boggling level. The chapter on propelling machinery alone is 67 pages long and has 118 illustrations, and even details ladders and gratings in the engine room. I purchased both volumes of the original editions back in 2009 but eventually sold them a couple years ago. Remembering how much I loved both books, I bit the bullet again recently. Compared with the 2008 edition, not much has changed. Both volumes feature some minor tweaks to the diagrams, a few typo corrections, an expanded bibliography, and a key to the general arrangement plans. This isn't a deal breaker in any sense since the originals were pretty close to being masterpieces anyway. Volume one now includes an eight-page color section featuring some "Olympic" artifacts and diagrams of Olympic's side discharges and the Welin davit gear. Volume two's color section has been expanded to 16 pages and includes more White Star Line artifacts, postcards, and renderings of interior spaces. Although the contents are essentially the same, the main area of improvement is the quality of the binding. The original editions suffered from excessively tight bindings that couldn't handle the weight of the books. My copy of volume one tended to creak and groan like a sailing ship in a storm, while volume two split its binding after only gentle use. I'm happy to say this edition is holding up much better to repeated use, and doesn't seem inclined to split at the first sideways glance. The slipcase is fairly sturdy but perhaps a little too tight; the dust jackets are already starting to show some wear from being repeatedly removed from the case. "Titanic: The Ship Magnificent" isn't cheap, but if you're a serious "Titanic" buff or have a stronger than usual interest in the technical aspects of the great liners, it's worth the current going price. It's also a surprisingly effective primer on early 20th century merchant shipbuilding, with plain language explanations of difficult concepts backed up by a 40-page glossary. These are the kind of books that serious "Titanic" buffs could get lost in for hours and still only skim the surface of.

If your special interest is the Titanic and you have an interest in design and technology this is a great book set. I do wish it had more coloured pictures, as most are black and white. Many pictures are from The Olympic, but the book clearly states when this is the case. I gave it 5 stars because I am an interior designer and was interested in the ship from a design perspective. There are detail drawings of millwork for example that the average person would likely skip over. This is not a light reading kind of book, the volumes are huge and very heavy. The series gets 5 stars from me for the sheer volume of information and research that went into it's production.
