DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Back Roads Northern & Central Italy takes you away from the main roads to beautiful villages and picturesque landscapes. This full-color travel guide uses in-depth local knowledge to create driving tours full of original ideas for activities, off-the-beaten-track stops, and authentic places to eat and to stay. The itineraries include guided walks through historic towns and unspoiled countryside, as well as practical information for each drive, including the rules of the road, detailed maps, clear driving instructions, road conditions and the length of the drive. You'll also find information such as the opening hours of restaurants and attractions, plus a range of activities and tips on buying local crafts and produce. DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Back Roads Northern & Central Italy has a pull-out road map for easy navigation between drives and all the practical information you need on your way to experiencing the charm of Italy. Review: Excellent for planning purposes. - I have purchased several of these books for different locations and have never been disappointed. The roots are clearly shown both in the context of the country and the region. The drives tell how long they are in distance and what amount of time they will take. You can also find the distances between towns on any route. In addition to this, The authors highlight different sites and activities and events in the areas along the route. I really love these books and purchase them frequently for friends that are traveling abroad and renting a car. This makes it possible for people to plan their own trips and tours at their own pace. Without it, they may be left only with the option of joining a professional tour with other people. Review: Excellent resource - This was a great book for providing ideas for what to see during our trip to Northern Italy, and to pinpoint spots for stopping while drove from the Venice/Treviso region down to Rome. There were some very interesting spots and regions that were missed in the book (e.g., Pitigliano in Tuscany), but by and large, the book and that map that came with it was very helpful -- certainly a lot easier than clicking around the Internet. I love web research, but for a personalized driving trip that requires you to see both the big picture and then zero in on sites, I find a book is a much better tool and this one was great for that. One hint to the authors & readers: if you decide to drive through Italy and plan to rely on your own GPS brought from home, do two things: make sure you buy a GPS SD card loaded with maps of Italy to upload into the GPS (the basic GPS only covers North America), and also ask someone at your hotels or other destination points how the location is/might be worded in a GPS. We stayed in a fairly sizeable, well-known hotel tucked away on the Mediterranean coast, but we had a very difficult time trying to find it because we did not use the correct name/location as recognized by the GPS. Thankfully we could ask people where it was. Alternatively, if you plan to use the rental car's GPS, make sure the car agency sets it to English vs. Italian for you. If using your own GPS from home, make sure the agency shows you how to turn off the one in the car. Don't make the mistake we made: take either of these steps BEFORE you drive away with your new rental car!!

The real Italy
Good book, allows you to explore the real beauty of Italy. We enjoyed very much the small vilages, markets, all were recommended in the book. A must for those who want to skip the big cities The only thing in my opinion that has to be upgraded is the directions instructions that has to suit to the new gps app. and instead of writing roads numbers have to be the name of the places on the way.

Great book for travelers looking for an experience away from the crowds.
Great book, I have used other books from DK over the years and I highly recommend them to anyone traveling to a new country. This book helped us plan our trip in Italy (have not been yet) as we enjoy exploring the lesser knows spots by car. We have been to Italy a few times and this trip we want to see more of the local culture, I find that the best way to do so is to get away from the main tourist areas a little bit. The book shows you routes through smaller towns and the main attractions too, if you like to do this too, grab this book. I used the UK version a couple of years ago and it was fantastic.

Only helpful if you want to follow their itineraries
This book features 25 different drives through northern Italy. Good if that’s what you want to do but not helpful if you want to visit other cities that are not on one of their itineraries. There is nothing about other locations throughout the region. It does include a detailed map which is helpful.

Ideale per weekend "on the road".

Very nice guide - buy very small print
Really useful, nice guide.... but 'tiny' print; so bit difficult for those with less than youthful vision!
