Puzzling Mystery with Solid Writing
Mr Toomey writes very well-- reminds me of John Banville's erudite prose. This murder story is not a mystery but rather an exploration of the reasons for the killing. Since this is a domestic story we get to hear the voices of others in separate chapters which are written quite convincingly. The whole premise that the murderer wants the narrator to write a novel about his crime provides a glimpse into the research methods of a novelist. The early chapters are intriguing but the process of trying to find the answers to why the crime was.comitted tend to become rather long and wordy. The ending is a let down and one that satisfies the novelist/narrator but leaves a reader somewhat tired of all the searching for so little. Not a novel for mystery fan but of interest to readers who enjoy probing psychological behavior.
