The Abyss [2Blu-Ray] [Region Free] (English audio. English subtitles)

Still a very good film, the special edition is 2H 51mins long. Quality is good. This was finally delivered by Royal Mail on 9th June. Postnl passed it to Royal Mail when in the UK. However they triggered a delivered status and passed to royal mail, just stated a local delivery agent. This information does not appear on my Amazon account. This is and will confuse any one ordering this item, or similar imports,.

I thought I'd been sold a pup at first with this , the disc arrived 5 days quicker than expected (excellent} but the cover had French titles & descriptions unlike the advertised item ( I assume it's a Canadian version). Amazon describe it as a two disc version but it does come with the 3rd extras disc. When I tried playing the 4K disc my machine (a panasonic UB400) displayed 'disc compatablity issues' and wouldn't play although the std blu-ray did. Having recently altered a few settings following a on-line tutorial I changed the 24p output from 4K to automatic & the 4K disc played perfectly.Picture quality & sound are excellent & it's been great watching a film I hadn't seen since the VHS days

Bought my copy from Uniqueplace-UK. Arrived a couple of days late, but in perfect condition. Well worth the 2 week wait (came from Switzerland). Unfortunately, the BBFC have refused to allow any complete version of this film to be available in the UK since the Special Edition was released on DVD around 20 years (maybe more) ago. Basically, the BBFC refuse to release it without having the scene involving a rat being placed underwater completely cut. Cameron has refused to cut the scene, so it has never been released in the UK on blu-ray and, whilst originally a UK release was meant for the 4K version, the inclusion of this scene made them cancel its UK release. This means that the only way you can get The Abyss in 4K is to buy a version from another country. Fortunately, 4K Blu-Rays are region free so you can enjoy a foreign release in the UK. The version I bought is the Italian release (purchased from Switzerland) and, whilst the cover is in Italian, it prompts you to select country version when it first loads, allowing you to have all the menus in English and it includes the 7.1 Dolby True HD English soundtrack. It loads straight to the film rather than the menus and seems to default to the Theatrical Version. If you want the Special Edition version (and you do) then simply launch the menu, choose Set Up and switch versions. The 4K release is, as expected, beautiful and a 1000 times better than the previous releases I've had on VHS and DVD, making all the dark underwater scenes more vivid and clear. The film itself, is (in my opinion) one of Cameron's best and the Special Edition is by far the best version to have been released. Fully recommend both the film and this wonderful (finally!) 4K version.

I have been looking at this movie for ages and reading the reviews of the movie some people say you can only get the abyss in German or Italian title and the synopsis are not available in English but I was very impressed when finally found it had been released in AMERICA that was Great News for me at least the titles and the synopsis were available in English I no you can select on the disc which language is preferred to you but I am very much interested in 4K movies and DETAIL that can be produced from my home cinema atmos cinema setup the Quality of the Film in 4K is wonderful deep blacks and bright colours and no blotchy dull pixels the film must have been taken straight from the original 4K Film if it was transferred from OLD VHS TAPES the Quality of the picture is very much noticeable

I Got this at Christmas and it plays on my 4K player (in the UK), just fine, as any other disc does. It’s an American import, so it takes two to three weeks to arrive at your door from the day of ordering. I’ve read that people have ordered The Abyss from all different European countries and it works fine, but the minor drawback is all the foreign writing on the box, plus you have to select English on the menu. Where with this American import, it’s as if you bought it from HMV for instance, (the box blurb is in English and there’s no having to select English on the pre menu). The picture on Amazon UK is a cover of a 4K UHD disc, but the description says it’s a 2 blu-ray, which is confusing and misleading, don’t threat though, it is a 4K UHD disc. In fact there are three discs, a 4K UHD copy that has the theatrical and extended editions on it, a blu-ray which has the same, and then a special features disc. Also on my TV, the aspect ratio was just fine, normal, (black bars at the top and bottom). There’s been some comments about only seeing the picture as a small box on their screen, but this version was just fine. I have an LG TV, Panasonic 4K player and a LG Dolby Atmos surround sound system and the picture, and the sound I think are amazing. I’m not reviewing the film, I just wrote this to help anyone who is not sure what version to order as it’s banned over here. So to reiterate, get this version if you want to watch the film (only), in 4K UHD, as 4K UHD discs are region unlocked. DON’T get this version if you intend to watch the film using the Blu-ray Disc as they’re region locked… You would need to get a European version. Lastly, if you’re into watching the bonus features, then this American version would be no good for you as well, as they’re on a Blu-ray Disc too. Hope this helps.

This is the kind of blu ray that vindicates me for plunging into the 4K disc medium, and the perfect vindication if you do own the kit. A classic movie close to my heart, one of the finest technical achievements in film to this day (see the extras...), and best of all, it's such a good example of how beautiful 4K movies can look and sound (Dolby Atmos!) in disc format when they're scanned, rendered etc. properly. And you can't even get the extended version in the UK, which makes me feel slightly smug too, if I'm honest! Looks like it was shot yesterday, undoubtedly better than it ever looked in cinemas, and while the special effects (which pioneered technologies that went on into T2) look a little dated - it's not that bad and I gloss over them with fond memories anyway...but after 35 years at the pace our tech moves, that's an incredible statement!

So my copy's got a Spanish cover, but the discs work fine in my player. I haven't seen this movie like this ever - I couldn't see it in the cinema - and the old VHS version of the Special Edition I had was mastered for a 4:3 screen, so... New, a slimline case, very happy with the service through the post. If you like this movie, this is a terrific find and worth getting. The BIG Behind The Scenes interview with James Cameron is wonderful.

Looks great in 4k but you’ll need to adjust your TV settings as it has shadows in certain scenes. Always enjoyed this movie, especially the extended version.

I've enjoyed this movie ever since it came out. I had a VHS copy, but was holding out for a high-definition release on Blu-Ray. Many years later, when I saw that it was coming on 4K, I knew I had to get it. I wasn't disappointed. The story revolves around a nuclear sub going down near one of the deepest trenches in the ocean. The Navy enlists the use of an experimental deep-sea oil drilling rig and crew to engage in a rescue/salvage operation. To complicate matters, a hurricane on the surface causes damage to the rig, isolation for the crew and the appearance of a mysterious alien presence from within the trench. The movie is a fantastic adventure with great Oscar-Winning effects and a really gripping story. While all accounts describe the filming process as extremely harrowing and difficult, the end product is really something to see. We also have great performances by Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio despite the challenges they had to face while filming the movie. I can watch this movie multiple times and with this new 4K remaster, it's even more enjoyable. There will probably be disagreements on the 4K remaster, but personally, I think they did a fantastic job. I've seen a review or two on-line saying that the DNR and smoothing makes the movie look too artificial. In my opinion, it looks extremely realistic. Everything is sharp and clear, and you feel like you're looking through a window into real events instead of watching a film. To me, that's what High Definition is supposed to be. Some film buffs like "grain" in their movies, but to each their own, I suppose. The package is nice. It contains 3 discs. First disc is the 4K copy with both Theatrical and Special Edition versions of the film. The second disc is Blu-Ray which again has both versions of the film. I'm very happy that you can see both versions of the film in both formats. Frequently on these 4K releases, that is not the case. Third disc is Blu-Ray with special features including new interviews and footage with director James Cameron as well as archived features from an earlier DVD release. I can't recommend this package enough. I know that there is already talk about how Cameron's other recent 4K releases are not as good. This one, however, is very much worth it. You won't be disappointed.
