Origin Effects Cali76 Bass Compressor Pedal - Classic

Best compressor out there for bass.

I bought the Cali76 and the Boss BC-1X so that I could compare them. I was thinking (and hoping) I would find a small enough variance between the two ("the Cali76 can't be THAT much better) that I could return the Cali76 and save almost $200. I returned the BC-1X. Too be clear this was a personal fit, as I definitely think the BC-1X could make sense for some people; it does sound good and is almost half the price. However, the blending and combined features of the Cali76 were too good for me to do without; it's objectively much better than the BC-1X. One issue I had with the Boss pedal is that when playing live, when I lowered the threshold so I could get application of the effect on almost every note, it turned my volume way down, so I had to turn up the guitar and other effects more to compensate. The Cali76 addresses this issue with a combined "input" knob. As you turn it "up" it both increases the input and lowers the threshold. So with that one, the opposite effect happened as with the Boss: as you lower the threshold (by increasing input), the overall volume goes up. And lest that concern you, there's also an output function that allows you to dial back the volume if it's too much (e.g., if you're trying to have the same volume when engaged and in bypass. I also love the Dry and High Bypass Filter knobs, which allow for blending overall dynamics and low frequencies, respectively. I like a little bit of blend on the dry function (a touch of uncompressed signal) and keep the HBF pretty high, which really allows for those nice bass tones to come through. Other reviewers have talked about the attack/release option, which is another great feature. I keep that one turned all the way up (slow attach/quick release), which gives the sound really nice "pop." These features are why I love the Cali76, and it sounds amazing. While the BC-1X sounds good and may be a great pedal for some, you're basically missing out on all these super cool features, which for me make the difference. And it's worth the extra cash because otherwise it feels like I'm coming up short on what I need my compressor pedal to do for me.

Were you are your Bass guitars Sole, your Compressor is it's Mojo. With the Cali76 the Blend, and HPF dials are it's Milk and Honey. As bass player, your Compressor is your most important pedal, and one should not compromise on this one. They really cleans things up. -Use the Blend dial to slide in some parallel compression, by blending your Clean and Compressed channels, creating a very natural felling sound. -Use the HPF dial (High Pass Filter), to recover your lower end, which can be subdued by the compression. Resulting in creating a very tight professional, natural sound.

I moved the original Origin Effects Bass Compressor to the pedal board for my upright bass, where it works great. This new model, used on my electric Bass, is even better. I particularly like the ten LEDs indicating the amount of compression.

Outstanding Pedal for any Bass players out there. I recommend you all add this sweet thing to your pedal boards.
