Is this rock hard? Or does it have some give?

It has a soft neoprene (or something) cover, but beneath this it is hard. You can use the backpod on something soft such as a mattress, bed, sofa etc for a gentler effect, or on a firm surface, such as the floor, for the full effect . You can always try a tennis ball or something harder, such as a cricket ball, in a sock, for a cheaper option, and move onto the backpod later if required.
