Luckily I read the reviews
This is a beautifully made piece of kit and much sturdier than the plastic ones I have broken so many of. The first time I used it I couldn't believe that I couldn't cut all the way down through the loaf. I had it all packaged up to return. Luckily I read the other reviews and that caused me to look closer at the product photos - turns out I had it upside down first time!! So I will try it again tomorrow morning and I am sure it wont be going back now!.

Persevere
After rubbing mineral oil (olive oil in my case) into the bread slicer every day for a week, as instructed, I did not feel I could return it. When I first tried it, that was my reaction. However, the first trial I used it incorrectly, with the sides flipped open on the wrong side - result, uneven wedges of bread. So, the next time I got it right - but still the slices were uneven and it was awkward to use. Eventually, I found a way that worked. I use an electric bread knife on home made bread. The trick for me is to bake a smaller loaf so that it is not a lot taller than the slicer. Then, to use one groove that is the right width. This means I have to use a manual slice at the end so the bread slice can be pulled out. Then I cut again in the same groove. So, now I am cutting even slices. I am happy enough with the product now but only after persevering. Therefore I have only given two stars.

Difficult to use
The bread slicer is sturdy and well made, however it is so wide that you can't draw the bladevof an ordinary bread knife backwards and forwards in a cutting motion in order to actually cut the loaf. If you buy this, you will also need to buy a bread knife with a very very long blade.

fold away well and is easy to keep clean which is a bonus
Bit wide for our homemade loaves - so we need to get a bigger knife as our bread knife is too short (we have a normal bread knife as part of our knife set). The Bread slicer does, however, fold away well and is easy to keep clean which is a bonus. Seems study enough too. So it is OK and better than the plastic one we had before which kept breaking - just need a really long bread knife if they exist!!.

Badly designed.
It's awkward to store because it comes in 2 parts. The endstop piece could have easily fitted under the guide slots when they fold down, if they's been made just a teeny bit higher. But no. When they fold back they are just not quite high enough to allow the endstop piece to tuck under, so it has to be stored separately. That's annoying, because I only have a small kitchen so I can't afford the space to put it in its own box, so the separate piece can easily get lost. The guides for the knife blade are much too wide, so the main intention, i.e. to allow bread to be cut into slices of consistent thickness, doesn't work very well. Disappointing.

My breads much more evenly sliced!
You need a long bread knife to fit through one side to the other, and for support while cutting. That said, it's simple to use, easy to clean and store, and my bread is much more evenly sliced than before!

Thick or Thin - The Choice is Yours
A foldable bread slicer made of wood! The spring-loaded arrangement of the slatted wings is ingenious and tactile, allowing it to reduce in size for storage. A long bread-knife makes the cutting easy. The end-board can be fitted in any of the gaps between the slats of wood....that is why the gaps are all 5mm, while the slats are of various thicknesses......so if you want thin slices of bread you place the end-board next to a slimmer wooden slat, which requires the build of the slicer to be made with precision, which it is. Also, with the proper woodcare equipment the slicer becomes a thing of beauty, (and I love it).

Good for slicing homemade bread.
This bread slicer was bought as a present and the ‘receiver’ seems very pleased with it, although the has said he’s going to need to buy a longer knife to make it easier to use.
