If an answer machine/vooicemail accepts the emergency call will it acceps this as an answer?

No. The SureSafe Alarm uses smart technology that means an answer machine or voicemail will not fool it, and it will continue to dial the next number in the saved emergency contacts. A real person needs to answer the call and press any button on their keypad to acknowledge the call. Only then will the alarm stop dialing the other emergency contacts.

Can you speak to the person who presses the alarm or does it just make a noise?

No you can't. The quality of the microphone and speaker are so poor that it's impossible to communicate clearly even in the same room. This means that the person who has raised the alarm has no way of knowing whether their call for help has been received.

My mum has only one phone socket. How could this equipment work with her existing phone.

Hi and thanks for your question. The alarm comes complete with a telephone splitter/double adaptor that you plug into the telephone socket. Can the system be used abroad? ie: my dad is in portugal and i am in the uk.

All you may need to do is use a local Portuguese telephone cable to plug it into the socket, as it comes with a BT telephone cable. These are easy to get and only cost a few pounds.
