Cinema’s great modern mythmaker Guillermo del Toro uses the hallmarks of classic horror and fantasy to tell a strange and sublime fable about outsiderhood, connection, and love’s transcendence. An ineffably touching Sally Hawkins plays Elisa, a mute janitor at a top-secret government laboratory who finds herself drawn to the facility’s newest research subject: a humanoid amphibian—for whom she is soon risking everything, amid the stifling conformity of 1960s America. A triumph of visual imagination that combines elements of sci-fi, noir, and the golden-age musical, this swooning cinematic dreamscape—winner of four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director—is a monster movie with a human heart.DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES4K digital master, supervised by director Guillermo del Toro, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrackOne 4K UHD disc of the film presented in HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special featuresNew conversation between del Toro and filmmaker David LoweryA Fairy Tale for Troubled Times, a documentary highlighting the film’s production design, performances, special effects, and scoreAnatomy of a Scene: Prologue and Anatomy of a Scene: The Dance, both featuring on-set footage and interviews with del ToroShaping the Waves, an interview with illustrator James JeanMasterclass from 2017 on the film’s technical aspects, featuring del Toro and crew membersTrailersEnglish subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing and English descriptive audioPLUS: An essay by film critic Carlos Aguilar

First time buying from Criterion Collection and loved it. Quality case and came with Blu Ray and 4k disc and a little booklet which was a nice surprise. The film and case quality were worth the buy and I’ll be seeking more CC versions of a few more films. Movie was great too

Criterion Benchmark Standard
The Criterion 4K Blu-ray disc has an exceptional picture versus other 4K studio transfers. The film itself has a great storyline complemented by a list of underrated actors. A great visual masterpiece by Guillermo Del Toro. This Criterion edition is well worth the price. A benchmark standard to add to your collection.

Someone who stands on the side of the oppressed
Director Del Toro has been depicting "companionable beings" ever since "CRONOS" (1992). A companionable being is someone who somehow feels close to monsters (in this film, strange creatures resembling half-fishmen: hereafter referred to as half-fishmen) that are loathed by normal people, never abandons them, and sometimes showers them with love, always trying to be by their side . In the case of "CRONOS", it was the granddaughter Aurora who stayed by her "grandfather" ( Federico Luppi)' s side until the very end, even as he transforms into a blood-sucking monster . On the other hand, in this film, it is Elisa (Sally Hawkins). In this story, set during the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union, Elisa, a simple cleaning lady who is a "companion," is the protagonist . She not only brings food and treats the experimental guinea pig, a half-fish man, captured by a high-ranking government official named S. Trickland (Michael Shannon) kindly, but also carries "him" out of the facility and gives him a bath in her room (he is an aquatic creature, so the bath is for him), and at the end, they fall in love with each other. It's a strange story when you think about it, but it makes you forget about that, and the beautiful use of colors makes it an impressive and moving fantasy love story. If I say any more, it will get boring, so I'll stop here. Finally, it should be also noted that Director Del Toro portrays the Russian scientist, Dr. Robert Offstetler (Michael Stuhlbarg) , as a good man.
