Rebel Girls Build the Future: Terrific Tales From The Metaverse

I’m not familiar with other titles in this series, so I don’t know if it’s on par or below par alongside others in the series. I ordered it with the intention of passing it along to the library I worked at, once finished. I changed my mind once I saw it though. It looks like little more than an ad for Meta. I liked another reviewer’s suggestion to combat the heavy Meta sponsorship-feel by using a brief sentence or two in the back mentioning that the women featured are all employed by Meta. The life of each woman featured gets one page, which limits the depth of learning about or interest in the subject. The pictures are okay, not really engaging. I will say that this book is worthwhile to have as the erasure of the history of women in STEM are making even the vaguest testimonies of their accomplishments disappear.

I got "Rebel Girls Build the Future" for my son who is interested in technology. This book features profiles of 18 women in different careers at Meta, plus a foreword by the head of art for Reality Labs at Meta. One of the women is referred to as their which isn't explained. There is a code to scan for bonus audio stories. The profiles don't provide as much details about the career paths and jobs as I hoped. But, there is a What's Your Role in the Metaverse quiz at the back of the book, as well as some pages to prompt readers to share their story and dream up a digital world. I think this would be a good book to check out of the library, but it might not be worth owning if not really into the Metaverse.

Rebel Girls Build the Future is a wonderful collection of 18 true stories about women who took their passion for art and technology and turned it into a career. While all the women work for Meta, whatever your feelings are about that company, the women and how they made their way in this field are nothing short of inspiring. For Middle-Grade readers looking for role models, this book is a great starting point. It teaches them how women are shaping the modern world and not just getting by but are leading the way. This is a series I will be looking more into to help inspire my own daughter to see all the things that women can do and are doing in today's world.

This had the potential to be such an amazing book if only it focused less on Meta. I love that it featured stories of women and their unique journeys to landing their dream jobs in tech. But it read too heavily as a promotional ad for Meta. It would be so much better if Meta wasn’t mentioned at all in the individual stories, and there was just one page explaining that all these women work for Meta.

I've ordered other books from the rebel girls series but the goodnight versions in the past and have really loved them. They help feature stories of women in history and I love reading them to my kiddos to help inspire. This book is no different in that it features 18 stories of women who work for Meta and are helping to shape the future in technology in the metaverse. The book itself though is a thin paperback. I was used to the hardbacks like the goodnight series. I guess this one is made for a little bit older kids but it was still a little bit of a letdown on the size and content. It is only 56 pages in total. It also is a weird collaboration if I am understanding correctly with Meta the company and the back says they all for for Meta. It feels more like a promotional item for Meta than anything given its smaller size and company specific nature. It says it launched in November for National Stem Day to celebrate Women in Stem which is neat. I just wish they had presented it better in a larger hardback edition or something instead of what they went with.

I am a fan of the Rebel Girls books so I picked this up for my seventh grade daughter. She enjoys virtual reality and immediately recognized the Meta logo. I let her go through the book and pick a couple of bios for us to read together. The bios are easy to read and accessible for kids. The book also includes a quiz at the end of the book that suggests which job type might fit you best. If you have a child who's interested in technology, this book is a great match.

This thin book has beautiful graphic depiction of young women who work in STEM fields as well as a brief description of each woman’s background and career field. What I liked most is that the women are from all around the world so it shows how women of all walks of life can achieve. The book is in collaboration with the Meta company which has recently announced changes to its diversity programs. The Meta company’s current stance seems at odds with this book and may cause a conflict for those who want to pick up this book.

This book highlights a variety of women who all work for Meta. There is a short bio and some info on each person, their role within Meta, and an illustration of them. The illustrations are beautiful and honestly more enjoyable than the writing. There isn't much information provided on each person. The book is great overall for showing girls they can work in STEM fields but not so much for research. There's an early 2000s style quick in the back of the book to find out what job you'd enjoy the most, as well as a glossary. There is also an activity on building your own profile, etc. I appreciate the diversity within the book but it's not as engaging as other biography books we have.
