How do you keep the line from unwinding when not in use, and what is the purpose of the hole in the side?

I use a section of motorcycle inner tube to hold line down, but you can use a rubber band or something. And the holes are for your fingers, as far as the center hole goes, I have no idea why it's hexagonal, maybe to prevent spinning if you used it on a bow or sling shot?
