1001 Inventions That Changed the World

Full of information! Just sitting and browsing though, I was pleased with the coverage in this book. We’ve been super busy, but I look forward to picking it up again.

Like one of the other reviewers, I too spotted this book while walking through a bookstore and thumbing through various pages while the spouse was off shopping. I too jotted down the title and ordered it from Amazon when I got home – not because the price at the bookstore was all that high. Instead; I knew that “someone” would wind up carrying it for the rest of the shopping trip and it surly wasn’t going to be my spouse. This is a very big book! Once the book arrived, I wasn’t able to put it down. Besides being an excellent compendium of inventions with detailed images, cutaway drawings and background text, it’s quite simply a fun read. Just open to any page and you’re bound to find something of interest. The book now gently rests on the night stand in our guest bedroom where it frequently sparks the morning conversation over coffee whenever friends and relatives are in town.

A broad overview of the history of invention, starting with prehistoric times. 1001 inventions is a lot to cover, so do not expect to learn enough from this book to "build your own." I think this book is an interesting approach to brushing up on the history of the human race and some of its distinguishing qualities: The ability to innovate and evolve, and to leave something behind for future generations to learn from. I was happy with my purchase. I wish it were available as an e-book, though. It weighs a ton.

First I was surprised at how big this book is! A person could spend a lot of time with the book and still want to pick it up again. It isn't a book to sit down and read, but one to sit down and thumb through. I find it hard to put the book down once I start looking at it. I don't think there is a significant invention or discovery that is not mentioned. The only drawback--if you consider it that--is that there is only a page or less about each invention. While the book is thorough in including all of the inventions, it has only minimal information about each one. Still, it is a very fascinating book.

Love the format of a brief history of important inventions up to modern day. It’s a book you can pick up, read a snippet and learn something new

I have two Books that I consider the best books I own. The first book is the Holy Bible and the second book is this book "1001 Inventions that changed the world". I am amazed how these inventions have changed the world and how a simple invention like Eli Whitneys "Cotton Gin" brought about the death of hundreds of thousands of americans in the american civil war. I never knew that the word "Gin" was how the word "engine" was promounced in the american south as "gin". This is truly a gift book for anyone.

It has plenty of good general information and historical photos. However, it emphasizes history/story-telling rather than the mechanics/engineering of the design.

I got this to help with a school assignment. I'm not sure how much it helped for that, but it sure did spark his imagination and interest. It is more of a history of the items than the engineering behind them, so if you're looking for more scientific, you might want to look elsewhere.

An excellent book

Very bad organization. Not recommended.

Fantastic book. Read it and learn. Not just the stuff everyone knows about but the grain elevator, the disk brake, paper, ice cream machine, kaleidoscope, the steel plough - everything you use was once an invention.
