NATIONAL BESTSELLER One of Smithsonian 's 10 Best Science Books of 2024 Neuroscientist and New York Times best-selling author of This Is Your Brain on Music Daniel J. Levitin reveals the deep connections between music and healing. Music is one of humanityโs oldest medicines. From the Far East to the Ottoman Empire, Europe to Africa and the pre-colonial Americas, many cultures have developed their own rich traditions for using sound and rhythm to ease suffering, promote healing, and calm the mind. In his latest work, neuroscientist and New York Times best-selling author Daniel J. Levitin ( This Is Your Brain on Music ) explores the curative powers of music, showing us how and why it is one of the most potent therapies today. He brings together, for the first time, the results of numerous studies on music and the brain, demonstrating how music can contribute to the treatment of a host of ailments, from neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinsonโs and Alzheimerโs, to cognitive injury, depression, and pain. Levitin is not your typical scientistโhe is also an award-winning musician and composer, and through lively interviews with some of todayโs most celebrated musicians, from Sting to Kent Nagano and Mari Kodama, he shares their observations as to why music might be an effective therapy, in addition to plumbing scientific case studies, music theory, and music history. The result is a work of dazzling ideas, cutting-edge research, and jubilant celebration. I Heard There Was a Secret Chord highlights the critical role music has played in human biology, illuminating the neuroscience of music and its profound benefits for those both young and old. 40 line drawings Review: Great gift for hippie music lovers. - Gave this as a gift and the recipient started crying. From sound to silence - hearing music in a new way
Steven Pinker suggested that music is "auditory cheesecake" - a pleasurable but non-essential byproduct of other cognitive functions. This book stands in stark contrast to that assertion. Levitin weaves together decades of research across multiple scientific disciplines to provide surprising insights that had me listening to music in new ways that were both personal and universally human. He typically omits competing perspectives, giving the impression that his claims are stronger than they perhaps are - but his arguments, examples, anecdotes, and stories are plausible and compelling. Another way of saying to read with an open mind - but not so open that your brain falls out. I am glad I read the book.

Read with Audiobook
It personally took me a while to get into this book. Once I finally got in to it, it flowed nicely. Even though I have no music background, I found it relatable and knowledgeable. Having to audio was a plus cause the narrator did a great job.

Fascinating!
as a former disc jockey, I've always been comfortable is the presence of music, whether in a studio, on the radio or, preferably live...I even worked at a newstalk radio station in San Francisco, but interacted with those employed by our 2 rock stations...music always played in our lobby, and was always present...Listening to live music at a venue like Hopmonk Novato is always a transcending experience! Just Add Beer!!
