Flexible power options and good radio reception
This £10 radio is an excellent choice for a grab bag as recommended by the UK Government. It has a hand crank which charges up the internal rechargeable battery which can also be charged via USB. This is kept topped up with a solar panel on bright and sunny days. It also takes 3 AA sized batteries so plenty of options in an unexpected power outage. There is a switch on the side which is easy to miss which switches the power supply between the internal battery and the AA batteries. One other reviewer might have missed this switch which has to be in the 'LI-ION' position if no AA batteries are fitted. The two lights are very handy for emergencies too. They're not super-bright but they provide a little light which is better than nothing at all. Using these lights in the dark make it quite tricky to operate the switches and tuning on the radio. I think the LED reading lamp under the solar panel isn't very effective and I would have preferred to have had illuminated dials and switches on the radio instead. Either this or a different design so the LED reading light folds out to illuminate the front of the radio. The tuning and volume is via two rotary dials and there's a green LED light to indicate when a station is tuned correctly. It was easy to find all the usual BBC and commercial stations in my area and the sound was clear. There's a good extendible aerial for FM which isn't needed for AM stations. The design makes it look like there might be two stereo speakers but there is only a single mono speaker in the left side of the radio. This is adequate for it's purpose. There are two sliding switches on the radio. The one on the left operates the torch and a loud siren. The design isn't great with an 'off' position in the middle. It's easy to slide the switch too far when turning the torch off. It would have been better to put a dedicated 'on' 'off' button on the top of the radio for the torch and leave the switch on the front exclusively for the SOS siren. The radio and torch are both useful in a power cut but I can't imagine any practical use for the SOS siren. The other sliding switch powers the radio with a position for FM and AM respectfully. There's an LED light to tell you when the internal battery requires a charge and a charging light that illuminates when you turn the crank handle, when the solar panel is receiving enough light or when it's on charge via USB. I fully charged the internal battery and the radio and lights have lasted for several hours so far. The instruction manual suggests the radio will last 11 to 12 hours, the torch for 41 hours or the reading lamp for 48 hours after a full charge. Turning the hand crank for 5 minutes gives you 15 to 20 minutes of radio play at maximum volume, 2 hours of the reading lamp or about 100 minutes of torch light. The radio will charge a mobile phone or other USB device in theory but the internal battery is only 4000MaH so would only be useful to charge a phone up just enough for an emergency call. In the event of an unexpected power outage in the UK, the primary method of communication between the public and emergency responders would be via the BBC emergency radio network which is why it's important to have a radio like this one - preferably with a spare pack of AA batteries. It's likely that home broadband and the mobile phone and data networks would not function so a mobile phone would be of limited use. Search 'prepare' on the Gov.uk website and see what else they recommend for a grab bag.

Compact and good to go trekking in the wilderness
It’s got great reception and the channels come through clearly, the winder is okay but not substantial and I will always be careful with the wind. It’s compact and great for the price and the solar panel is a great little option for charging.

Review
Charged in the Sun for 5 hours, extended aerial,.... nothing. Hand cranked also for a designated time, and still nothing. Changed locations for better reception, and still nothing. Neighbours looking out their window must have thought I was slow dancing with a Radio, hoping for a peck on the cheek at the end of it. Waste of money. Avoid.

Superbe petite radio polyvalente à usage quotidien

Ein absolutes Must-have – 5 Sterne!
