The matter for me to be solved was relatively simple in the scheme of things--gain a network connection for a desktop located in the garage shop--300 feet from the WiFi router. After tossing about the issues with building a repeater/bridge link I began looking at these USB wireless adapters. At the price point and general consensus of reviewers, the Alfa seemed the best solution for the matter. This unit has a very small footprint, and I had it up and running 5 minutes after opening the box. Although it ships with a CD that contains drivers and connection management software I found that neither was required. The PC in the garage is an old XP system and the card loaded and connected to the OS wireless network management interface without problems. I also plugged the device into a Surface running Win10 and experienced similar results.Both antennas were tried out. The 5dBi vertical achieved a consistent 4 of 5 bars signal strength with 50-60mbps throughput. The 7dBi panel array achieved a solid 5 bars and 72-90mbps into a USB2.0 powered port. I suspect that the throughput would be better with a USB3, but my old PC does not have that. Using an old D-Link DIR-825 WiFi router attached to the PC's ethernet network card (and bridged to the Alfa adapter) I have also created a WiFi hotspot that serves any wireless device out in the shop, or back yard and pool area. Perfect!A matter of note. I connected the Alfa's output to a GY561 digital RF power meter and measured an output of 493mw from it. This is the power that feeds the antenna. While there may some mechanism to boost the output (like some routers with custom firmware), a half watt is it. This is still sufficient to get where most people need to go and with some custom antenna arrays such as yagi's may see sufficient gains to get a lot further than 500'. But for general extension at my distance I cannot complain a bit. Just an issue with them advertising 2W of output...

I have tested it out with Ubuntu 12.10, Ubuntu 13.04, and Backtrack 5 R3. This wireless adapter is plug-and-play compatible with all three of these OS's.I have also tested it on two Windows 8 laptops. On one it was recognized and was plug-and-play. On the other, I had to use the software from Alfa's website.The device also works with OS X 10.7.3 after using the driver on the Alfa website. The only downside is that the device management window for the wireless adapter pops up every time the computer turns on with the adapter plugged in.I had purchased this device to use it during my security audits for my job. I was trying to decide between this and the 36H version and I am very glad that I went with this one.I was really happy with both the range and quality of the signal (although the range was not as far as others had claimed it was) and the compatibility with all the above OS's (especially backtrack). For those who are wondering, both packet injection and monitor mode work for this device. It is very easy to disassemble and store away in a bag, making commuting with it very easy.The included clip, extra antenna, and USB cable all work great. No complaints whatsoever. I would definitely buy this product again.
