The Midwife of Auschwitz

I am enthralled with the Call the Midwife television series. I have now been reading stories of World War 2 and midwifery. I started this one and had a harder time getting started with it. But so very good reading it. it brought thoughts of my husband's Grandmother. she was sent to America from Poland during WW2. Her family stayed in Poland. she never saw her family again. The horror of life in Poland during WW2 is not what I learned in History class.This is something I hopes never happens in this world again. If we all were reminded of the horrors hopefully they would not happen again anywhere. The book is well written and the story comes to life. The Catholic woman was easy to identify with, but so was the young Jewish woman Ester. The horrors in their town and at the camp are easily understood. The coming home from camp and the sadness and happiness of trying to build a life again are not often thought about but I can let my imagination try to relate to some times during my life. But never comes close to their daily hell. enjoy this book!

So, starting off with this: so well detailed that I couldn’t finish the book. I almost feel badly not giving the 5th star because I didn’t finish, so I don’t know how it ends. It became too overwhelming and sad for me (in a serious empath, so it was just so emotional). This was so well written, I genuinely felt like I was there in the bunks. Definitely a tough read for those of us who are sensitive, but wow, amazing.

I have always enjoyed books set pre, during and post WW2. This is a beautifully written but heart wrenching book. It is so descriptive that I felt immersed in the story. I cried a few times. I rated it 4 stars because there were things that went unanswered and ends that weren’t tied up, thats just hard as a reader but it does fit considering all the people who were left without answers in the wake of the war. The people who found ways to help eachother and fight back in such terrible circumstances were so inspirational. I would definitely recommend this book.

Be ready to gut-wrenchingly sob throughout these pages. The author attacked a whole different perspective of the holocaust. This book tore me apart in every chapter. It was completely unputdownable despite the stress I went through in reading this. To even fathom the pain and torture these women went through is disturbing to another level. And the author was so graphic, you felt like you were there and felt the pain. 💔 the courage and strength these women had to endure... It's heartbreaking. And in the most disturbing way, this book was so very well written.

The last 80 or 90 pages of this book I binged. It's an incredible read and coming from someone who rarely reads fiction let alone historical fiction, I'm so happy I gave this one a chance. ✨️ This is a story that captured my heart and I'm so thankful that @annastuartauthor was able to tell the tale of the 3k babies that were born into this death camp. It's remarkable. It's terrifying. It's tragic. It's love. It's honest. And it's a part of our history as a collective. If this topic makes you comfortable then this is the book for you. In my opinion, it had little do with with midwifery and everything to do with human kind during WWII. That being said, you don't need to be fluent or even passionate about birth in order to receive the medicine this book has to offer. Again, thank you Anna for creating such a story and giving light to the souls lost during this time period.

While I can’t say I love the writer’s style, I did enjoy this different view of life during WWII. Set at Auschwitz-Birkenau, two midwives deliver babies in simply awful conditions. My main complaint, and it was the same with The Tattoist of Auschwitz, is that some of the storyline doesn’t seem real (eg chance meetings that seem 1 in a million).

Absolutely heart wrenching read but still packed with love, community, and hope. I cried so many times, my heart shattered again and again but, this book deserves to be read.

This is the heartbreaking story of two polish women sent to Auschwitz, during the second world war, Ester, because she is Jewish and Ana because she is accused of resistance against the Nazi regime. Ana is a midwife and Ester a trainee midwife. Ester got married to Filip shortly before her arrest, Ana is married with three grown up sons. The families are torn apart, Ester and Ana do not know if their families are dead or alive. The reader is transported in the darkest, most evil times in history. Whilst in Auschwitz, Ana and Ester end up helping pregnant women give birth in terrible circumstances. Most babies are drowned as soon as they are born, some are left to die of malnutrition. The blond babies are taken away from their mothers to be given to German families. It is truly heartbreaking. How can anybody survive witnessing such cruelty? Then, Ana and Ester come up with a plan to try and save some of the babies. They are showing such bravery and empathy risking their lives by putting their plan into action that it does restore some faith in human nature. A book inspired from true events which will leave all readers moved to tears. A book everybody should read to remind themselves of the horrors of the war and the bravery some people showed during the darkest times.

It is my first reading a book about war and honestly it is a piece of art. I really like the realism of the story and the storyline is really not for weak hearted people.
