Firstly, there's a very big difference between ordinary charcoal and activated charcoal. These bags contain activated charcoal. How it works When air passes through these bags, the activated charcoal adsorbs (not absorbs) particles of impurities at a molecular level. This is used in RO water purifiers for taste and odor removal too. What to expect I have one room without a window which feels stuffy, there are tons of old clothes/boxes which often give out mild odor and feeling of stagnant air. Got this to make the air feel fresh. It definitely works when used correctly!! Make sure that you: 1. Hang it in a place where the air has a chance to pass through the activated charcoal bag. Don't expect to keep it in a tightly enclosed space and expect it to work. 2. Get sufficient quantity. If the room is small but there are many windows which allows new and odored air to come in, then you need more quantity of activated charcoal. 3. Make sure you dry it outside in bright sunlight every 3-4 weeks. Eventually, it will have to be replaced after 1-1.5 years.
