My younger kiddos love matching and creating words, and I love that they’re reinforcing blends and digraphs without even realizing they’re doing schoolwork. The bright colors keep them engaged, the plastic pieces are super durable, and the container makes for easy cleanup (hallelujah 🙌). It’s perfect for both independent play and quick educational games together. We use it for everything from sorting sounds to silly made-up word races. I bought these sight word flashcards for my 6-year-old, who just started first grade. She isn't behind in reading, but I wanted something that could give her some extra positive reinforcement and help her get more comfortable with common sight words. The set comes with five packs of sight words, with the packs color coded and labeled by difficulty, which makes it pretty easy to keep everything sorted. Each card is double sided with two different words, and there is a lined area on each card where kids can practice writing the word with a dry erase marker. The cards also include a picture and a sentence using the word, so there are a few different ways for the child to interact with each word. I like that the cards are a medium thickness rather than feeling like very thin paper cards. The included keyrings snap around the punched holes in the cards, so you can keep each set together or take a smaller group along with you. That makes it easy for travel or just grabbing a few cards for practice. The dry erase markers were another nice addition. There are four total, two black and two red, and all four worked right after opening (which was pleasantly surprising because I was expecting at least one to be dry, Murphy's law anyone?). The eraser caps are handy, and they erase decently well. They don't leave everything perfectly spotless, but that is pretty typical with dry erase surfaces in general, so I don't consider that a major issue. The biggest downside for me is the drawstring storage bag. It's a good idea, especially since I would prefer to get rid of the original box, but the bag isn't quite large enough to hold the entire set. I was only able to fit three packs of cards along with all four markers. It's also a mesh-type organza material that feels like it could eventually come apart, although I'll have to see how it holds up with regular use. I also think some of the pictures could do a better job of demonstrating the actual sight word. Since the cards are intended for young learners, I expected the visual connection to be a little more obvious. The sentence underneath uses the sight word, but the word is only bolded rather than underlined or otherwise highlighted, so it doesn't always make the connection as clear as I would like for a beginning learner. There was also a weird chemical smell when I first opened the cards. It has been fading as they've had time to air out, so it isn't something that would stop me from using them, but it was definitely noticeable at first. Overall, I think these are a useful set for extra sight word practice. I like how the cards are organized, the writing practice is built right in, and the keyrings make it easy to separate the levels. The storage bag could be better and I think the pictures and sentence formatting could do more to reinforce the words, but those are fairly minor issues for us. It meets my expections, which was an easy way to give my kiddo some additional practice and reinforcement.
