Review: Great grammar work book. - This book is not for total beginners, rather for students who already know the basics of grammar and quite a bit of vocabulary. If you're learning on your own outside a class environment, this book can help you with some ideas and prompts to practise your Finnish. Review: A good grammar workbook. - This is a useful workbook if studying Finnish but I think it is for a level somewhat beyond rank beginner. One of the first exercises is in consonant gradation and has no explanation of what the student is required to do or know. It seems to assume a fair level of competence already, so I must put it to one side until I have progressed sufficiently. However, looking ahead, it does appear to build grammatical skills and vocabulary as well as suggesting various home-study techniques.

Not comprehensive - But very good examples.
It's difficult to evaluate a language grammar book, except by the expectations fulfilled. I might have imagined a more comprehensive content, but what has been presented is both practical and well explained. The challenge with a language like Finnish is its complexity and subtlety within that complexity, but I feel this book deals with enough subject matter to make it an asset. I gave it 5 stars because of the balance it achieves with the subject matter covered.

Solid contents, but not for beginners
I got this book early into my Finnish learning journey and it was basically impossible for me to follow at the time. One year later, an entire Duolingo course and some additional learning on top and the book is now useful. Would say don't pick up this book until you are around A2 level and have learned a fair bit on Finnish grammar (or have accompanying material).

This isn't bad, but is rated as for Advanced Beginner
This isn't bad, but is rated as for Advanced Beginner. I bought it as I was frustrated with trying to learn from the Complete Finnish book, but wasn't explaining why you used a word with one ending in one situation and with another ending in another situation, in other words the grammar. All my questions (as I got frustrated in the first quarter of the teach yourself book) were assumed as already known by an advanced beginner. Thus the combination of books still doesn't help me.

A very good book indeed
I'm using it as a follow-up on the Complete Finnish and I find that I am able to understand most of the vocab and do quite well in the exercises while revising the grammar (it is a lot more detailed and thorough on that than CF) and expanding my vocab. I find it very well structured, with each unit devoted to one grammatical point and the new vocab relevant to the grammar (ex. food and the partitive). It also has writing exercises that are well suited to my A2 level. It would probably be better if I had a tutor to give feedback on my writing production but I'm having to make do with Deepl!

Don’t listen to the other commenters...
As it says, this book is for advanced intermediate (B1-B2) learners and is a tutor to supplement other texts or as a grammar course, but still for intermediate learners (i.e. review and build confidence). As an advanced learner of Finnish, this book is excellent for quick review and practice. The lessons are well-structured and hits all of the key points of grammar and appropriate vocabulary for those topics. This is not a beginner’s (A1, A2.1) course and is definitely not for conversation.

Accessible option for intermediate learners, yet too few exercises
I bought this book following "Complete Finnish", also published by Teach Yourself. The reviews suggested I may need a higher level of Finnish to enjoy "Finnish Tutor", and "Complete Finnish" really prepared me to it. "Finnish Tutor" has a range of activities for grammar, writing and reading, as well as learning new words. Also, there are brief theoretical explanations and keys to each exercise. Still, I am dissatisfied with the number of exercises for a certain grammar/vocabulary topic. They are just not enough for me to drill the skill and to remember the concept/word. In the end of each unit, learners are proposed to self-assess their competences, and I was not able to grade myself positively on any by just using this book. I stopped doing exercises because I felt I needed more resources but don't have time to look for them and to make up them myself. Also, in the vocabulary in the end of the book, there are not all B1-C1 words you need to know and which the book is using itself. If you are looking for one-in-all book that will allow you to advance and polish your Finnish, this is not an option. I would call this book "Finnish Refresher Before Exam", but for Tutor, it is too shallow and too fast-paced. However, in comparison to Finnish workbooks with slower pace and more exercises, Finnish Tutor is a great compromise in terms of price and availability (it's not so easy to order from Finnish websites living abroad).
