What size screws should I use to attach these to a cabinet made with 1/2" plywood?

You might get away with 1/2" x 6 or 8s...maybe a slight dimple in the underside. If you are covering the cabinet with fabric inside or out you shouldn't have any problems. IMHO

Will these work for square edges

These work for square edges only if you remove the point of intersection of the three edges about a half inch....The point will hold the bracket out too far from the surface planes if the point is not removed!
