Did the connecting loop change recently and become thicker and stiffer.  I prefer the thin flexible loops

We improved the frame with soft material for comfort and fit. The New Model is designed with removable filters of original material. If you read the enclosed instructions, they say the filters must be cleaned daily with an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner.  I don't have one and don't want to spend another $30+ to get one. We're upgrading Ultra Breathable Nasal Filter recently and it is now replacable.Please kindly notice that WoodyKnows Ultra Breathable nasal filter replacements (New Model) can be washed by water, but a ultrasonic cleaner is needed for thorough cleaning. It takes 2-3 minutes in a ultrasonic cleaner, with 70% alcohol for maximum protection. You can keep the filter "in" the frames when washing, e.g making it easier not having to remove and re-install filter everyday.

Does it end the hay fever problems? Protects against mites?

It well help with hay fever it is not a cure for that if the mites are to small it may get through if the filters are something else it is listed on package info if not it may be on amazon.com web site or web MD should no if not.

are they reusable and can you clean them with mild soap and water.

Yes, I used mine for about a month, cleaning them under running water after each use. The manufacturer recommends not touching or scrubbing the filter because it could be damaged pretty easily.
