Works off grid, but don't boil too long
Bought these to try for myself but as it turns out, my kids really love to use 'em. They snap easy and the warmth is very nice, even on a 25 F morning. They don't last all that long (30 minutes or so for the round ones and 60 minutes for the green ones) but considering that my kids started them from a very cold place (they're not at "room temp" as we live off grid) they last longer than expected given the conditions. Reactivating them is easy to do. However you do have to watch the time they're sitting in the pot. After a couple of uses one of my green ones formed a big air pocket. I later learned from customer service (stellar folks!) that overheating will cause gas to expand within the pack, forming air pockets if left boiling for too long. Eventually they get so big that reactivating them is very difficult. And with that explanation, customer service sent out replacements right away. I'm happy with the product so far. We've been doing science at home, even. Kids compare how long heat last in a pocket v. a baggie v. just left out v. a sock or glove. Baggie wins, btw ;) Good material, good company, great customer service. I do recommend this and I look forward to showing these off to my "city folk" family.

4.5 Stars! Excellent Product, Accurately Described, Fits the Purpose I had
The HotSnapz Hand Warmers are an excellent product. They were described well. I found the reviews to be very helpful. The reason I am giving 4.5 stars instead of 5 is that I just wish they were hot a little longer. Mine warm immediately upon being "snapped" and last well for 45-50 minutes, then are luke warm another 15-20 depending on external temps. They harden as they cool so they end up kind of clunky in my mittens but in 5 degree weather in CO this past week, my fingers were toasty on my nearly hour-long walk. I generally walk an hour a day so they are perfect for me. The small round ones fit in a zippered compartment in my mittens. If I wear gloves I put the larger square Hot Snapz in my coat pocket and keep my hands in my pockets. For the use of keeping fingers warm for an hour, you cannot go wrong with the price for the product--and best of all, just boil to get them ready to reuse over and over. No waste! I love that.

Don't fall for other products -- these are THE ONES to get
The thing you have to understand is that the amount of heat depends on how much of the chemical is present and how thick the pack is. Theres a lot of similar stuff out there, but with smaller packaging and less volume. You don't want those! You want these! They actually get quite warm and stay that way for almost half an hour. Not only are they great for hiking or even for sitting around the fire pit, but I use them for helping with pumping milk for my baby. It's the perfect length of time for a pump session and I can move them around and help warm things up so that the milk moves! I know Frida mom makes this product specifically for that purpose, but there is barely heats up-- the pack is too thin so the heat is not concentrated enough to make a difference. These are the best. They also make amazing stocking stuffers!

Great concept, but very short duration of warming
I really want to like these and the concept is great, but they just don’t stay warm very long. The initial warm up is quick and very nice. It quickly transitions from a liquid gel texture to firm yet pliable. They take about 10 minutes of boiling to reset and not very long to cool down, which is nice. Very portable, and the small ones are the perfect size for hands—thick enough for a natural grasp around them. The green rectangle ones work perfectly to relieve some sinus pressure or muscle aches and what not. The red hand warmers lasted me about 20 minutes and the rectangle green ones, even less time. I have Raynauds and the rapid warm up and length of time does work well for quick relief, but as far as staying warm for any length of time, it’s disappointing. Overall, I’d recommend them if you need something quick and for a short time, but if you are looking for something longer, these wouldn’t work for you.

Update: Superb Product and Superb Customer Support
2019.02.22 update: hotsnapz.com honors their lifetime warrantee. We have had 16 in constant use since Feb 2015. Two have gotten lost (not covered by warrantee), and two have failed. I called hotsnapz.com; the warrantee is very simple: you pay for shipping, they ship you a bunch of replacements. Even though I bought them through Amazon, they had my purchase on record so I didn't need any paperwork to prove my purchase. I spent $8.00 for shipping, and they sent me 10 replacements. I do not have to return ship the two dead ones. Fantastic! 2015.02.20 Original Review: Awesome! And Easy to Use (with practice). Green ones are best. These are great little hand / back of the neck / bottom of the back warmers that last about 15 minutes. Please note that they are too big to fit inside standard fitting gloves. We love them in the evening while watching TV and to warm up freezing fingers after working outdoors. To use: flip the metal piece back and forth so it snaps. Maybe that's obvious, but it took me a few tries to figure that out. Then mush the stuff all around to make it heat faster (and probably last less time). To recharge: I use a pasta pot (look for "Stainless Pasta Cooker 8Qt Stock Pot Strainer Lid Set" here on Amazon to get the idea); that way there is no chance of one hitting the bottom of the pot and burning. I put the handwarmers into the top part, bring the covered pot to a full boil, turn down the heat to simmer (still covered), and set the timer for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, I use a plastic spatula to fish them out and put them on a cooling rack. I then pour the boiling water down the bathroom sink to help keep the pipes clear. We prefer the green ones, and when we order more, will exclusively get those. The red ones are nice but too small.

The good and the bad
I'm rating these 5 stars because I'm definitely a fan. But it's not all good news to report, so I'll give you the good and the bad. First the good. Because these are re-usable, these things do save you a lot of money. Also, they get much hotter than most hand warmers, and they're really fun to use, and to show off to people. Seriously. FUN! However, they don't last very long before cooling off. I generally only get 10 minutes of strong heat, and then another 15 to 20 minutes of it slowing going from warm to cold. There are things you can do to make the heat last a little longer, like kneading them repeatedly. Also, if you keep them in your pocket, they last longer than if they're out in the cold air (logical, right). And someone else suggests you heat them up before activating them, which slows the 'freezing' (heating) process (I haven't tried this yet, but it sounds like it makes sense). Another thing is, it can be a bit of a pain having to take the time to boil these every day after using them, and personally, I've been lazy about it, and often let them sit for several days before boiling them. This is something you need to avoid doing. You need to boil them down right away. Don't let them sit in their hardened state. If they're allowed to sit, for some reason, when you do try to boil them down later you'll have a much harder time, and sometimes not be able to at all. I don't know why this is, but it just is. I've ruined a lot of them that way. So, learn from my mistake. Also, regarding their pretty color and appearance - don't expect it to last. The color fades quick, and they start to look really ugly. But it's not about looks, right?

Great science project, meh survival tool.
These sound like the greatest invention ever—and don’t get me wrong, they’re fun as hell to play with. Click the little coin inside, and you get an instant chemical reaction with heat. But do they actually keep you warm? Not for long. The listing promises up to 40 minutes, but in my experience, you get about 15 minutes of real warmth before the temperature starts dropping faster than my hopes for this product. The good: Awesome for showing kids how exothermic crystallization works. It’s like a magic trick. Super easy to recharge—just boil them for a few minutes and they’re back to “new.” Tough enough for daily handling. Never worried about them popping or leaking. Come in different sizes, but don’t expect more heat—just maybe a little more time from the bigger ones. The not-so-good: Not very hot. Never got to the “ahhh, that’s better” level of hand warmth, more like “well, that’s something.” 15–20 minutes of useful heat, tops. Don’t count on these for real outdoor survival or long winter walks. Fun as a fidget, and maybe worth tossing in a backpack as an emergency backup, but I ended up switching to an electronic hand warmer for real warmth. Bottom line: Keep them as a science demo or a novelty gift. If you’re hoping for serious heat, look elsewhere. Good stuff, not great stuff—but guaranteed to make you the star of any classroom lesson on phase changes.

Great product, great value!
So convenient and love that they are reusable. Hot heat lasts about 30 minutes and stays warm for another 30 minutes. Long enough to warm those fingers! Also we use them as a "hot rock" replacement prior to massage! Great product and will definitely buy more for gifts!

Only heats for 10 minutes
I wish i had read the negative reviews before buying. These only heat for about 10 minutes even when starting indoors. Large or small pack makes no difference. I’m surprised they advertise this as lasting 30 min to 2 hours. Usb Rechargeable hand warmers like Ocoopa are much better

Not up to the job.
Massive disappointment. Got these for when I watch my children play football in the cold. They get warm quickly but hardly lasted even 10 minutes and definitely didn’t keep me warm or warm me up even a little bit. Total let down and I’m really annoyed I’ve wasted my money too. I wanted to get something reusable but I’m likely to go back to disposable after this awful product. Do not buy.
