Brilliant, but really more pertinent to warmer, more southern climates. His theories about growing are interesting but don't seem to apply to northern Europe.

Books represent food for the soul and that affirmation is especially valid for those that actually have something to teach us. One particular example could be given by `The One Straw Revolution', one of the most imposing and interesting books written by Masanobu Fukuoka, a true master in the field of natural farming. Many books have been written on this subject but none has managed to reach so many people, bringing new ideas and concepts in our lives, demonstrating clearly the advantages of natural farming. Masanobu Fukuoka is one of the few men that have understood that it is essential to protect nature, the environment and deter from intensive agricultural techniques. His book, `The One Straw Revolution' strikes the reader by the sincere tone and straight manner in which it is written. Modern agriculture is carefully studied and compared to natural organic farming, being based on many years of experience as an agricultural scientist. It is meant to bring back to our attention the importance and numerous benefits of traditional farming, taking care of the nature that has offered to us so many great things throughout the time. Reading `The One Straw Revolution' is like discovering notions you thought to be long forgotten. It is more than being reminded of natural farming; some even say that it resembles a spiritual awakening, rediscovering once more the connection between man and nature, between us - human beings - and land. The book describes how natural farming offers beautiful crop yields compared to those that are obtained through modern means and the author highlights that we make too much use of motor trucks, fertilizers and pesticides. You might think that `The One Straw Revolution' is just about natural farming but if you read carefully between the lines you will see that it is in fact a call for coming alive. Natural farming allows for us to be healthy and we should all be interested in this aspect of our life. Many great things have been said about Masanobu Fukuoka, the organic farmer and the great thinker. His books are widely presented over the Internet, people being genuinely interested in purchasing them and wanting to discover more about `The Road Back to Nature'. The title of this book is more than suggestive, hiding a very powerful message about the way we have influenced nature and contributed to its becoming angrier with us. The author expresses his disappointment with modern agriculture, the ecological impact and the way the whole world is affected. Farming is not meant to destroy but to provide for the human race and many of us still have to understand this fact. Transforming land into desert, cutting down trees to make room for crops and other harmful practices are not something agricultural scientists should ever consider. This is not `The Road Back to Nature' and Masanobu Fukuoka knows it for certain. A man with experience and many years spent in nature, Masanobu Fukuoka has written `The Road Back to Nature' as a general attempt to raise awareness about the critical need for traditional farming. Reading such a book reveals all the part we have played in global desertification, reducing the fertility of land and reducing forests that are vital for our existence. It may seem all too harsh but it is real and most importantly we need to take action. Nature is at the disposal of man but when it is harmed, consequences appear. With `The Road Back to Nature' we are taught that we can do good without imposing our power on nature, taking care of all the things we have been gifted with. Heb het boek nog niet uit (ander van hem, wel) maar de schrijver lijkt me een genie. Heeft een grote liefde voor moeder natuur en inzicht in haar. Voor iedereen die theoretisch onderlegd wil zijn en praktisch biologisch wil telen maar je moet wel alles kunnen aanpassen aan je eigen omstandigheden!

Very good book

Masanobu Fukuoka expresses theoretical and practical means for switching from traditional to natural agriculture. Basically he writes that a farmer has to study how to furnish the minimum work for producing healthy legumes and fruits. No man but Nature intervenes in the process of production. This principle corresponds to a great change: a farmer is someone that first understands the functioning of “his” productive natural system and secondarily tries to slightly intervene, the less the better, letting the agricultural system be working in harmony with the predisposed natural forces. The fundamental idea is simple and is an answer to this question: since the origin, biodiversity is increasing on our planet. Nature knows how to do for continuously increasing Earth biodiversity. Thus, it is not true that in a crop field man has to share “bad” and “good” animals, because all animals collaborate for increasing the efficiency of the system, even pest microorganisms. It is better to share bad and good human thoughts. Example of very common bad thought: in a crop field there is food; if we want to have it, we must kill every other living organism that want to consume it. Example of good thought: nature generally increases biodiversity. A farmer has to understand how to go in the same direction and be able to use the natural forces for increasing his yield. Masanobu Fukuoka procedure required a lot of studies. Some are illustrated in the book. Essentially the general issue is based on well-organised crop successions and very simple operations focusing on soil restoration (quality and organic matter = soil energy). He is a retired agronomist (Japanese researcher leading the post second war plan of Agriculture restoration at regional scale) and in his personal farm obtains high yields (especially rice production) in healthy environment. Replacing "fight-for-life" with "co-evolution", Masanobu translates the Darwinian’s principles in agricultural practices. I strongly support this idea of co-evolution and will do my best for diffusing this beautiful, hopeful scientific concept among students, friends, soil and life lovers.
