This highly creative and imaginative book is filled with the most amazing illustrations. An unnamed boy and his unnamed sister are left alone in the house. The first sentence reads: "Today, my big sister is in charge of the house, the lunch, and me." The bold lettering of me immediately alerts the reader that something is up. Big sister is zoned out with her earbuds in her ears reading a book of her choice and little brother is hungry, impatient and wants to be read to. In a desperate attempt to get her attention he pulls one of the buds out of her ear and shouts, "I'm hungry." Doing her caregiver duty she opens a can of soup for her little brother, tells him to be careful as it is hot, and then ignores him again and goes back to her reading. This is when the fun really begins....and the boy's imagination kicks in and gets him into big trouble.The soup, by the way, is alphabet soup, and once it is heated creates a puff of steam that morphs into a giant, ferocious, Bengal tiger that rises out of his bowl. Once on the floor the humungous tiger looks even more menacing and it is up to the boy to defend himself at all cost. With spoon in hand the two face off and the boy finally declares war on the beast. This is an engaging story that has you cheering the boy on and wondering if his big sister will ever notice his life-threatening plight. Most importantly ( for all us book nerds out there) we wonder if his sister will ever read his book to him. This is a creative, humorous story with a nice surprise ending that I know you will enjoy. Kudos to our imagination and to excellent storytelling!

My 2.5 year old loves this book. She loved it for a couple weeks about 8 or 9 months ago and then moved on to other books. It's come around again as being a favorite that must be read several times a night. She loves yelling "I'M HUNGRY!" with me when the boy tries to get his sister's attention and also yelling "GRRRRRRRRR!" with the tiger/sister towards the end. The illustrations are just beautiful. As a mom, I appreciate having a book that I don't mind reading over and over again and that has dramatic points where I can ham it up and just have fun with my kiddo before bed.

A young boy is left under his sister's care for the day and he follows her around trying to get her to read him his favorite book about a tiger. But her answer is always, "later". She is focused on a book of her own and the music she has plugged into her ears. So he tries another tactic. He pulls the earplugs out of her ears and screams, "I'm hungry!". So she fixes him a bowl of soup and goes back to her book and music.Just as he starts to eat the soup lo and behold there is a tiger in his soup. Yep, a growling, stalking, furious tiger! This little boy decided to take on the tiger all by himself. When his sister sees him carrying on like a wild child, she picks up his book and read to him while he ate his soup. Did this take care of the tiger or will he still there somewhere?The author has written a fun, adventurous tale about a young boy's imagination and his attempt to tame a tiger. Imagination is a wonderful tool it makes reading so much more fun. She shows our children how to enjoy a book even if you can't read. The illustrations depicted the story so well that the young boy's imagination created his own take of the story. Then there comes the joy and excitement of reading or having the story read to you. Big sister is in charge of her little brother today, but when he asks her to read to him, she is too involved with her own book to bother with him. After asking repeatedly, he finally gives up, and requests lunch instead. She gives him a bowl of soup, and that's when his imagination blooms. How can he battle that tiger in his soup?Jeffrey Ebbeler has created a marvelously realistic tiger crouching in the kitchen, whose fangs and claws could frighten younger preschoolers, but delight older kids. Wonderful illustrations, but minimal story. Ages 4-6.
