In 1839, British artist Frederick Catherwood and his American companion, John Lloyd Stephans, were the first Westerners to view the immense terraces, fabulous temples, and elaborate palaces of the Mayans lost cities. Through their published journals, enhanced by extensive research, Fabio Bourbon has pieced together Catherwoods fascinating and mysterious life--including his other expeditions to Egypt, Central America, and California. More than 200 reproductions of Catherwoods original drawings appear throughout, including a rare color portfolio considered his finest work.

Beautiful Country & Beautiful People.
This truly is a great starter book for anybody who has an interest in Mayan architecture, art and history. The pictures of some of the Mayan art work is beautiful. I have quite a few books on the Mayans and Incas, my preference is the Mayans as my wife and I have been down to the Mayan area the past ten years and fell in love with the area, its people and their history, food, heritage, music and especially their culture. It's too bad the rich and the Mexican government thrive on the poor down there with all these resorts and the peanuts they pay them to work at them. After all, it's these poor workers who work their butts off to keep the tourists happy and make the owners look good. I thought slavery was a thing of the past but, I guess these owners only care about their big homes and yachts. P.S. Excellent price for the book and great service has it came before the due date.

Magnifigues illustrations

A great book for a historian and anyone fascinated with the Maya.
What a treasure for the eye. This big book is well worth its pricetag. I appreciate Mayan art, history and architecture and have been lucky enough to visit Tulum and another Mayan city close up. They have both been under years of restoration. The art of F. Catherwood captured what similar places looked like in the 19th century before the vines and trees were cut and repairs made. His art was one of the reasons I became interested and later fascinated by the Mayan culture. The text, by Fabio Bourbon, is helpful and literate, but the real attraction of this book is the unique art of Catherwood and the archaeological sites he recreated.

Beautiful Cover
Not just a beautiful cover but a beautiful book, excellent illustrations and text. I came across it on the coffee table in a hotel in Valladolid, Yucatan, Mexico.I liked the book so much that I tracked it down on Amazon and bought it second hand. The first Mayan ruins I saw were in Guatemala and Honduras, much less exploited for tourism, and this book reminded me of that happy experience.Buy it if you can.
